Check the page. In short: the product most likely never got properly installed, either due to insufficient user privileges on system directories (such as the one for fonts) or another Adobe product interfering. Therefore uninstall all Adobe products you may have on the system, including Acrobat Reader or Adobe Media Player, run the CS3 clean scripts and try again. Make sure to run as administrator while you do your uninstall/ install.

your advise cost me 6 hours of uninstalling and in the edn the same issue, the program that we paid good money for in this economy would not launch, neither is flash for that matter.Any other big general ideas? Now we have to worry about flash not working, if you care this is the error report

If you have a wound, do you blame the band-aid?

If your system is messed up, do you blame the software you are trying to install on top of the system?

OS installations are like cars; sometimes it's more expensive to continue repairing them, and it's faster, better and cheaper to get a new one (re-install the OS from scratch.)

However, if you insist on trying to patch everything instead of reinstalling, you are entitled to free support from Adobe for these kinds of installation and "getting started" issues. Contact Adobe via phone, find a local phone number at <http://adobe.com/support/>

These kinds of issues are very complicated to solve via a web forum, so call Adobe directly to get help.

Todd is absolutely correct. The most practical way to deal with this issue is to erase your hard drive and start with a clean slate. If you continue to have no success, make use of the money you've spent and call Adobe Support.

Jan, please do understand that we are merely users just like you (well, with a more insights into the Adobe mind, perhaps) and cannot be held responsible for whether products work for you or not. The cause of your issues is pretty clear now - the UI graphics system does not initialize, which in turn must mean you are attempting to run the stuff in an "unqualified" environment. What graphics card do you have? A notebook perhaps? Screen resolution? Also, since you are running on Vista Ultimate or Business, what are your settings for visual effects?

That's what I thought and dreaded doing but I guess I have no choice, it's the 12 hours that I can;t afford to build back everything as this is a working computer that pays the bills. Do you have any idea hopw many programs I have to re-install? this is no doubt a pain and I might as well buy another computer, this happens every time I upgrade with adobe, it seems like adobe does this on purpose to annoy the hell out of us paying users. I am mad, really mad that adobe is once again going to cost me hours or a new computers. I wish there was a choice out there I would switch in a minute. Adobe is an unhealthy monopoly that is more interested in your money than writing programs that work. Sure it's easy for you to sit there and say re-install but what about my time? are you going to give it back to me? What about my Microsoft suite, Accounting suite, plugins, QuarkXpress, Codecs, you name it. It's easy for you to say "re-install" but some of us have mortgages to pay, children to support and food to put on my table. I have NEVER EVER EVER had a problem solve in any of the Adobe Forums and this once again for the third time in a row been the case with their software. Thanks for your response but I'll dig into my account and buy a new computer

Jan, you may not get much success from the Forum because you've failed to offer any of the information required to help solve your problem. What kind of hardware do you have? CPU, RAM, display card? What OS do you use? What additional plugins, codecs? What Adobe bundle are you installing? Does your machine meet the required specifications of the software? Have you spoken to Adobe Customer Support as advised?

I've installed the CS4 Master Collection on two machines so far without any problems whatsoever, and there have been very few CS4 installation complaints on this Forum to date, which suggests that the problem lies with your system, rather than the software. Unless you are prepared to provide information that allows us to diagnose your problem, you're very unlikely to get any practical assistance.

Trust me, Jan, I've installed CS4 products more often than you and you're blaming the wrong people when you go on about the forums being useless. Now apparently the AE engineers prefer to stay quiet in their bunker and hope that Todd will hold the fort, but go over to the Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Encore and InDesign forums and you will see, that even the people developing this in your opinion intentioanlly spoiled software are trying to help. As for Adobe's alleged "monopoly" - these discussions are at best tiresome and have very little substance. There are enough alternatives out there, including free ones and nobody is forcing you to use their products. Are they big? Yes, nobody is denying that. Does it get in the way of doing "good" software - yes, of course, that too, sometimes. Still, we all have our reasons to use their products as we have reasons to use Microsoft, SAP and other products, regardless how many bugs those may have... It's all a matter of perspective and how much you are willing to do to work your way around bugs and limitations to be able to use those products. Yes, buying a new computer is always the worst alternative, but all things considered, you probably wouldn't expect Office 2007 to run on a 10 year old notebook, would you...?

You may want to start trouble-shooting your installation here: <http://generalspecialist.com/2007/02/troubleshooting-after-effects-7.asp>

I'd start by removing all non-OS-installed fonts and third-party codecs (DivX, XviD and all other stuff related to non-legal video watching).

You can contact Adobe Technical Support for help with issues like this. You are entitled to a certain number of free calls for "installation issues, basic usage questions, and troubleshooting unexpected behavior for documented features".

I'm sorry you've had such trouble with Adobe products. I'm really interested in writing programs that work, and we spend a ton of money and time testing things. Have you called technical support? That's our official support arm and are much better at troubleshooting system issues. They also generate reports across the products and allow us to track down issues that may be caused by shared components, as yours sounds it may be.

Before you rush out and buy new hardware (after all, we don't know what hardware you're using currently) you should consider creating a web support case, or calling Adobe Technical Support. Getting you installed properly is always a free support call.

Here's a short video on creating a web case, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

What I don;t understand is here I am upgrading to CS4 with all my programs working, no problem, then all of a sudden of all the new programs Flash and After effects won;t launch. So Now I am told to re-format my hard drive (36 Hours) by someone who does not know what kind of income that would zap out of my earnings. I refuse to do that, we build websites, edit videos and do programming here and it's better to go out ad buy a new machine that to blank my system because some dude on the forum says so. This happaned in the last upgrade and I bit the bullet but this time I am not going to play adobe's upgrade game. Dreamweaver launches but all the flash content is useless as there is no flash to edit my client's files-- Premier pro works but after effects does not so all the edits can;t be done. It's downright sleezy and the blame rests on Adobe. My system is NOT corrupt nor broken as was suggested, I wish I know why but I would go on no more with this nonsense from Adobe and it's Forumers, like I said I've got bills to pay and kids to support. Once again thanks for your concern, I've invested $799.00 in a new spanking Machine and like last pgrade the programs would work until CS5 which I expect to fail.

Who told you to reformat your hard drive? You state: "some dude on the forum says so". If that's the case, please remember these are the User to User forums, not an Adobe support forum. We chip in here and there, but we do not moderate every post and fact check it. That is what the official support system is for. Please open a support case so people who troubleshoot for a living can help you out.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your response. I have already done that, but still no luck. The sad thing about this story, as far as I'm concerned, is that it still hasn't been solved by Adobe. Its Maybe because I have a trial version, but how about Jan and perhaps other users having this issue; which have actually bought it! Like Jan said: for what it's costing, this product should at least launch.

Well hell, if this is a user forum on an ADOBE site, I would say they should have some support here. Just reading through this convinces me that once again a new piece of software was created and not fully tested. On the new product box does it have minimum system requirements and then next to it the actual manadatory system requirements ..... do we have to by a rig that has the exact specs as they one they tested it on. And how in the holy hell can a font stop After Effects from starting. I have seen after effects and prmiere and encore etc ... the menues look the same. I haven't seen any special fonts that after effects requires just to start. And why doesn't it just default to a system font and do the best it can displaying it ... why on earth would it just fail to start completely. I think Adobe maybe should answer. I have been drooling waiting for this product but after reading about these strange problems I'm holding off for now.

Steve, you don't get it, do you? This is a user to user forum and while Adobe may host and endorse activities on this site, but they may not wanna use this as a place to expose themselves so people can throw poo at them just as you did. And for fully tested - geez, you don't know dick. Who in the world could hope to test a program on any hardware configuration that exists such as you claim, given the plethora of possible combinations? Even Windows is full of bugs and does not run on any computer. Your arguments carry very little weight in that regard and you come across as someone who's looking to blame someone without even having explored all options such as testing the software yourself with the trials...

Okay Mylenium. I'm sure your right. You've known me for 20 years now and you can judge who I am and what I do and what I know. It is true I do not know much about what makes a program as complicated as After Effects to work on a PC, however, and I know they cannot possibly test it on every conceivable configuration; however, don't you think it should be self sufficient enough to just run on any configuration (modern technology of course) to some degree? Why should a font stop a program from working I ask you? I honestly do not know... this is an honest question. Why can the program not just fall back on a generic font so it can still work. And, if it comes with its own fonts, how can it not know where to find them after it is installed. These are legitimate questions, and I am probing users to maybe find out some things before I shell out thousands of dollars for a piece of software that might not work for me. I don't know who made you GOD of the forums Mylenium .... I would much rather have this Engineer Christopher Prosser slap down my message than you. Do you know anything about Satellite Communications equipment Mylenium? I hope so, because if your ever in a position where you want to purchase a frequency up-converters but you have been reading about some problems with them so you go to a Satcom forum and ask about these problems you'll probably end up being told you don't know dick .... but we all know different don't we?

Contrary to what you believe, I'm not suffering from a god complex. I'm quite well aware of my failings and own limitations (you know, the old "Know thine self" thing), including "not being nice" to people. But using the same approach from your side and resorting to personal attacks doesn't help, either, don't you think? And in all fairness: You should not come to a user forum if all you want is to vent some steam without even having any reassurance that the people you intend to address will read it at all... We are all sacrificing valuable (spare) time doing this, and I really consider it out of line to make demands to anyone. Anyway, I'm out of here. Okay, the calm approach. Can any user tell me why a program could be caused to not run whatsoever all because of just a font. If it didn't install the fonts did it give the user an error and say they weren't installed, and if they were installed why wouldn;t the program know where it installed them? This is my main question for now.

Steve, have you contacted Adobe User Support to resolve this issue?

No, but I haven't bought the software yet so they aren't going to help me most likely. Was just curious about little issues like this that may affect my decision. I was hoping that maybe the first user who complained about this in this thread had found out the answer by now and could share it with the other users. I don't know how to send a message specifically to the starter of this thread who was 'sincejan63' (and that was back in November) to ask him directly.
