I am trying to create a 3D ground layer which will reflect the images moving above it. Manipulating the ambient, diffuse, specular and shininess values in the 3D material options pull down have done nothing. Thanks for your help in advance.

Ambient, diffuse, specular and shininess are properties that effect how light effects the surface of an object. In 3D programs reflectivity is always different property. Since AE objects don't have a setting for this they don't reflect anything.

If you want it you'd have to try and fake it. I've tried to fake it and it isn't easy. especially if objects are at obtuse or acute angles to each other (anything other than a right, 90 degree angle.)

Although I think that expressions could be made to solve that problem.

wouldn't be so hard if you precomped all the objects floating in the air, then duplicated the precomp in your comp and put it above the ground layer in 3D space, then played with overlay settings or transparency and a slight blur to get the relection look would it? haven't tried it but that would work wouldn't it?

You can also try Conoa's 3d plug-in which has environment mapping.
