Replacing footage of one or more layers
You can replace the original source footage of one or more layers without changing any settings applied to the original footage. The new source footage or composition takes the place of the old source of the layers while retaining all the properties from the old layer.
To replace the source footage of one or more layers:
In a Timeline window, select the layer or layers to be replaced.
Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag a footage item or composition from the Project window to either of the following places containing the selected layers: the Composition window or the Timeline window.
Release the mouse and then the keyboard key.

My AE Mac is not on the network so I could not use the help and when I looked in the book I was looking under layers.....I would never have thought to look under 'Footage >replace'.....to me once its in the timeline its a layer......but here it is on page 97......

1. dup layer
2. Highlight the layer
3. Select the footage in the FOOTAGE BIN
4. hold alt and drag the footage from the FOOTAGE BIN to the layer
Voila, you have replaced the footage

Sorry but I just find an answer to this one. I have been pre-vising a project using 'filler' layers. Now that I have the actual material I was hoping that I could just drop them into the project and somehow 'copy/paste' all the properties - but how. Please do tell me I have to rebuild them all ??????
Someone suggested the following but it does not work
- dup layer
- highlight dub layer
- select new layer
- hold alt and drag new over dub
all this does is change the scale of the new layer
Thanks a bunch - James
5. Easy as pie!
