After downloading Acrobat Reader 6.0 I tried to open it and got a popup window which said:

"Unable to load required component: Unicows.dll"

even though the required file is stored in the same folder as the executable file.

Do you mean that you separately copied Unicows.dll into the same
folder? What version of Windows do you have, and where did you get
it?

Did a normal download of Acrobat Reader 6.0, which, by default, stored AcroRD32.exe and Unicows.dll into C:/Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/Reader

Then, after getting error message (while trying to open Acrobat 6.0) about "Unable to load required component Unicows.dll", did a copy and paste of Unicows.dll into the Windows (98SE) System folder, which did not help. My Windows 98SE was installed from a CDROM over two years ago. It has the standard Microsoft holographic image near the enter of the disk.

It's an odd message. It could mean that the DLL was damaged. You could
try doing a repair (is it on the Help menu?) in Safe Mode, with
anti-virus OFF.
