I'm trying to reduce the file size of my pdf. I tried the "reduce size" thing and it cut my file size from 55 MB to 35 MB. I ran "space audit" and it informed me that 5% of my file size is due to images and 93% is due to "piece information". What is piece information and can I reduce this component of the file? Downsampling the images further won't give me much more of a reduction since they only contribute to 5% of the file size.

PieceInfo is stuff stored by other applications. For example, when
you save a PDF from Illustrator, the PieceInfo contains the whole
original document, with all your swatches, layers etc.

I don't know for sure but I suspect "Remove private data of other
applications" may get rid of it.

One option which certainly seems to work with PDFs originated in Illustrator is saving the artwork as an EPS and then distilling it as you would any other PostScript file.

I've had huge supplied Illustrator files (anything between 50 and about 120Mb so far) reduced down to a couple of Mb, or even a few hundred K depending on the image content and Distiller settings.

Maybe not a suitable workaround for every eventuality, but it certainly strips out the pieceinfo.

Gord.
