In Acrobat 6 Pro you can use the PDF Optimizer to save files in older
PDF versions.

I have created a pdf using Acrobat 6 but saving it as version 4. When I try to apply document properties to the pdf file, such as security options after I have closed the file and someone in version 5 or earlier opens the file they see the message "This file may contain newer information than this viewer can support..." We would prefer that this message not show up for our customers when they view a pdf file. Is it possible to add document property information using Acrobat 6 and not have this message show up? I have tried saving the word file as Acrobat 6 and then reducing the file size to version 4 and once I add document properties to it, this message appears. The pdf file opens fine if I just create a pdf and not do anything to it but I really need to add security to it. We don't want to tell our customers that they have to download the latest version of Acrobat 6 as we would prefer that they just be able to open the file with whatever reader they are currently using. Does anyone know if this is a problem with Acrobat 6 or if there is a workaround? Thank you.

Thank you Aandi, but I don't have Acrobat 6 Pro just the standard Acrobat. Would I have to get the professional version to do this and where would I find the pdf optimizer?

Yes, you need Professional.

PDF Optimizer is under the Advanced menu in Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

In standard there's no pdf optimizer i don't think. go to file>reduce file size instead.

I tried file/reduce file size to bring it down from Acrobat 6 to Acrobat 4 but when brought in on a computer using Acrobat 5 the bookmarks don't work. I also tried creating the bookmarks after I brought down the file size and then the message displays when brought up in Acrobat 5. It seems to work somewhat if I create the bookmarks, put security on, while in Acrobat 6 and then use the file/reduce file size to create a second pdf for viewing in 4. Then the message goes away but the bookmarks didn't work when viewing in Acrobat 5 or earlier version. Will this same thing happen if I use pdf optimizer in Professional? I don't want to change to Professional if it doesn't solve what I'm trying to accomplish. This just seems like a lot of work instead of being able to just create a pdf that someone can view in a lower version of Acrobat. I've gone into my settings/printers/pdf settings and created a job options (v4) to downsave to version four but once security and bookmarks are created (using my version 6) the message appears in any earlier version of Acrobat reader. Is the only option I have to create the pdf in Acrobat 6, apply all my document preferences and then have to reduce file size and just live with the fact that someone using an earlier version of acrobat reader won't be able to use the bookmarks? I'm trying to jump hoops to make customers happy who don't want or know how to upgrade their acrobat reader to the most current version. Thank you everyone.

Well so much for creating everything in version 6 and reducing file size. My file size went from 2 MB in vers 6 to over 4 MB when I used reduced file! In order to reduce the file size I also need to turn off security settings first. If I do that and bring the file back into version 6 to put the security settings back in then when brought up in version 5 reader, the message will appear. Does anyone know if I have professional and use the pdf optimizer if the security can stay on before using the optimizer or does it need to be turned off then too?

To keep the version number you have to use the PDF Optimizer as the
very last thing you do, then close the file without any more changes.
Security counts as a change, a very big change.

Thank you Aandi, it did work with using file/reduce file size in my Standard version as long as I didn't save the "original" pdf with the security settings. It's a little monkey business but in case anyone wants to know here's what I had to do:

1. Create pdf using one of the built-in defaults and not my custom one I made that saved down to version 4.
2. Go in and set my document properties except for security.
3. Save the pdf (in case I need to revise or fix some bookmarks or settings later).
4. Go back in and set my security settings.
5. Do not save the original pdf with security settings.
6. Select file/reduce file size and rename file and don't do anything more with that file!

Thank you everyone (would have been a lot easier if Adobe hadn't built in that nusance message even though you can make it disappear but we don't want it to show up in the first place).
