The Adobe help document "reducing the size of .pdf files" says that Adobe files are generally smaller than their source file. Never! My Word source file with a picture is 98KB. The smallest I could get the new .pdf file was 251KB. How can I convert a Word file with a picture to a .pdf file and maintain the same quality when printing without increasing the file size? Help, Please!!

Your picture is embedd in word document?

You can control this option in word.

Figures are embedd in pdf document.

Check the compression settings in Acrobat Distiller printer and change the job options, if necessary.

I have the same situation with WordPerfect. I happen to own a copy of Acrobat 3.0 which does make pdf smaller, but more recent versions make the files larger. However, it does make a difference how the file is converted--converting with the WordPerfect "Create PDF" option makes files about twice as large as Adobe methods.

How should the compression settings be set?
It seems like there should be a simple way to have the document look the same when converted and printed out without making the file three times as large.

To suit you. There are choices because nobody can tell you what
balance of quality and file size is right for you.

Above all, experiment to find your ideal settings.

Also, if you are using the Create PDF button, that makes much larger
PDF files than just printing to Distiller. Do you really need all the
interactive features like bookmarks, tags etc. If not, use Distiller
directly or turn of the features you don't want.

It also depends on how the picture was saved in the first place.
