I have the same problem. The button is not greyed out, it has vanished.

Right click on the toolbar area, and see if you have disabled any of
the toolbars.

Or click and hold the mouse button on the graphics select tool...

Try starting Acrobat Reader while holding down the SHIFT key. Many
things will disappear, but does this button reappear?

Hello,
All of the toolbars are turned on. These are Adobe Online, Basic Tools, File, Navigation, View History, and Viewing. When I look in the Adobe in my IE Browser Window, it has the same 6 toolbars. With the information you provided, I've determined that the issue seems to be that the stand-alone Adobe Reader 'Basic' Toolbar consists of the Hand Tool, the Zoom In Tool, and the Graphics Select Tool. But in the IE Browser Adobe Window, the Basic Toolbar has those three buttons AND an additional one called Text Select Tool. That is the one that is missing on the desktop stand-alone Adobe. I do not see anyway to add that button to the Basic Toolbar...

Yes, starting the Reader with the Shift button depressed does bring up the Text Select Tool! (The only thing that I notice missing at this time is the 'Create Adobe PDF OnLine' button.) Do you think there is a way to have the Text Select Tool be there without the use of the Shift key, since when I double-click on a PDF document on my hard-drive to open it, it does so without the Text Select Tool being there? Or should I just always open ADOBE first using the SHIFT key, then open the document? Certainly it's not a big problem for me to do it the latter way if I need to.

I don't propose the SHIFT key as a way of fixing things, but of
discovering the problem.

Clearly, one of the plug-ins is removing that tool button. Leaving
aside the question of why, that leaves the question of which one.

Have you installed any third-party plug-ins into your copy of Acrobat
Reader? Was your copy installed by your company? Was your copy
installed from a CDROM for a special product, rather than downloaded?

I did not knowingly install any 3rd party plugins. My company installed it originally a few of months ago, but I do not know if it was from a CD or download.
Your comment, though, did make me suspect the installation. So I went to your WEB site, saw that the current download version is 5.1 instead of 5.0.5, so upgraded to 5.1. No luck, still the same problem. So I uninstalled Adobe 5.0.5, THEN installed 5.1.0, and now the Text Select Tool is always there.
Thank you for your assistance with this problem.
