There was a question posted by Paul J Arnett at 09:21am Aug 25, 2006 about installing the Acrobat 7.0.8 update and then him getting an error message that said "No valid serial number found. Acorbat quiting". I added to his thread but since there was no help from his original posting I wanted to bring it up again in case anyone now has a solution.

I was able to use Acrobat with teh update for about a week or so. Today when I logged into my computer I received a message saying Windows had to be configured to run Acrobat. It went through some update process and told me to re-boot. I did and it then said Acrobat could be used because JobOptions setting in the "All Users" folder could not be found. It then gave me a re-install this feature option which I took. Then it said I needed to re-boot. That was done and then I started receiving the exact same error message as Paul. As I said, Acrobat was working just fine for a week or more with the 7.0.8 upgrade until today. The only differnece between me and Paul is that he is using Acrobat Professional and I am using Acrobat Standard. The Knowledgebase talks about this error occuring when you deinstall a previous version of Acrobat after you install ver 7 or an update. I didn't do that. My old version 5 was deinstalled before I ever installed ver 7 a long time ago. I have the correct permission for the user account (admin). I do not have Creative Suite, never had Acrobat 6, have not used System Restore or any of the other possibilites mentioned in the Knowledgebase. I have tried using the Repair function from the Acrobat 7 CD and it didn't help either. Do I need to re-install the whole thing? Any and all help would be greatly apprecaited.

Sorry, I don't have a solution other than sometimes a reinstall is the fastest way to resolve the problems - not that satisfying though. I suggest you download the updates and run them individually, rather than try to run the updates from the software.

William, thanks for you response. Actually I did download and run the updates individually. But that's neither here nor there. I eventually put in the Acrobat CD and ran the Remove function. Then rebooted and re-installed version 7. Then it was time to run the 7.05 update and reboot. I am now where I can use the program again but I've lost a day's work. At the moment I don't plan to run the 7.08 update but I may run the 7.07 (I have both). What I can't have is this whole bloody mess start all over again.

If AA7.0.5 does the job, then skip the update for now. You can turn off auto updates in the preferences. When you have a lighter load, then try the update again. Make yourself some notes about what works and does not work as you go through these processes. Bill

Hi,
I have the same problem.
Even if I deinstall and re-install acrobat without any update it happens again. There's no way to solve this problem. It is clearly related to the 7.0.8 update. Ones you have updated you will can't anymore install an old working version. BEWARE BEFORE UPGRADE !!!

The following try didn't helped.
Go to Start > Run and type regedit > OK
Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat and delete that key

My solution:
deinstall acrobat.
deinstall indesing if installed. Don' repair it, you must deinstall it completeley.
reinstall it.
install acrobat. do not open the app until you have updated it to 7.08.

The reason for this message is not how it's stated in the error message but the real reason is that there's an other Acrobat Pro application on a PC on the same intranet (you local LAN).
Acrobat searches for other apps in your lan and checks the licensing info. Therefore on the other PC happens nothing but on the latest (your) pc on which you installed the app you get this message.

Now open on the other PC acrobat and then open acrobat on your pc. You'll see this message again. Don't close acrobat.
It asks for activation. Try to activate by internet, then if it fails activate it by phone.
When you activated acrobat close it immediately or it will fail and you receive an error like "a DLL file couldn't be written".
try it for a while and if you receive the same message error then reinsert the activation code and close acrobat immediately again or deinstall the acrobat app on the other pc in your lan.

I wonder, did you have any Anti Virus software running when you installed the updates?

Hi , we have all etrust antivirus version 7 but it really doesn't create any problems.
Howevere I noticed now that after a while the same error message appears again even if my pc is disconnected from the net.
when acrobat asks me to reenter activation code I simply press NO, acrobat closes and I can reopen it without an errors again.

If you don't have a CD, don't worry: just reinstall from the
downloaded installer. I would recommend putting a copy of the
downloaded installer onto a CDROM, though, because otherwise you
potentially lose everything and have to buy again if your hard disk
fails.

Hi all,

I use Acrobat at home and just updated to 7.0.8 and am getting the no valid serial number for acrobat and distiller. There is no tech support available until Monday (it's Sat am).

I purchased the download so I don't have the cd to install from. I am not on a LAN with other acrobat users and do not have an anti virus. I did try to repair and when that did not work I tried entering the serial number directly into the registry. Including the hyphens (should I remove the hyphens?)

Is there a post or article I missed on this topic? I'll keep searching.

Thanks Aandi all backed up and 7.0 installed.

Did anyone figure out how to update to 7.0.9 successfully after running into this problem? With out having to jump through so many hoops.

I reinstalled and can run 7.0 I have disabled the "update" reminders but I would prefer to update. Again I am not on a LAN and there are no other users involved. I did not deactivate and I did launch the product to make sure it opened. I really don't want to uninstall and reinstall again. I am totally blown away that a simple update could cause this problem and that there isn't a kb article about it.(that I could find)

Leslie,

The update could have caused it, but there could have been something
awry before that caused the update to screwup. Anything from Virus
and/or spy protection left on during installation or just ordinary
windows anomalies. If you re-installed from scratch, I'd download the
updaters and manually update to the latest.

Mike
