I recently uploaded a PDF file I created in Adobe Acrobat 5.0 to my web site. When I try to browse it with IE 5.5, I get an error message: "Expected a dict object." I've posted numerous other PDF files and am uncertain why this would happen. Any help would be much appreciated!

I cannot help you, but I am getting the "Expected a dict object" error message when attempting to open an AI10 file with Mac OS 9.2. I tried to place the file in a new document, I tried opening it in Acrobat, in Photoshop. No luck. Where is Tom Geschwender??!!

You are both "dict!"

This message usually realtes to uploading your PDF file as ascii or text, because, although it may look like a text file, it is really binary. Select "binary" before uploading and it should work perfectly.

Tom,

Thanks for the theory. Actually, I've been publishing the PDF as part of a FrontPage 2002 web. All of the other PDFs on the site (a few dozen, though most are not forms) are being uploaded in the same way.

Any other ideas?

Never mind the philosophy. Are you choosing BINARY or not? If not, it
is likely but not inevitable that PDFs will be damaged.

A few dozen wrongs don't make a right, and I am not a programmer, so I don't deal in theories. I am an engineer. I deal in absolutes. Using ascii or text instead of binary is the cause of the problem.

Michelle,

An Illustrator 10 file? Obviously, it must be opened in Illustrator. Why would you expect to open it in Pornoshop or Acrobat?

Sorry to belabor the point, but in my case only the folks with Acrobat(full product) are getting the message. People who use Acrobat Reader can still see the page. Even Reader 4.0 will bring up the page, but not Acrobat 5.05 with all the updates. Does this still appear to be a bad upload? Is there any documentation to support this assertation, because I know the uploader is trying to pin the problem on "corrupted software" on 5 different machines.

Did you come here for help, or to argue?

Upload the files as binary and see if you still have the same problem.

Or, you can click on that link to the right and pay ePeople for the same advice.

Late, I know, but for others who come across this page... What I believe Tim is holding back is newer versions of adobe Acrobat products tend to get more and more strict on the PDF file data they will work with. I have not found any official announcement to back this up, just a number of postings from different handles, on a number of different websites. The PDF has data it shouldn't have/is malformed. This also seems with your symptoms, that Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.x can open, but Adobe Acrobat 5.x complains. You could very well salvage the data by trying other PDF readers who aren't as strict with the format specs.
