I have an eBook which consists of five different chapters and each chapter is a PDF. I want to combine the five PDFs into one big PDF. How do I do it?

Open the first chapter and do Document > Insert Pages.

Search the "Support by product" knowledge base for that exact text. You'll find this:

<http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2e42e.htm>

(To find "Support by product" click the Support link at the top of any Adobe site page. Enter your search text and it will take you into the Support Knowledgebase.)

Actually I tried that and I get this error message "These documents contain subset fonts that have the same name and cannot be merged". How do I get around this?

I looked at the knowlege base and other threads about this subject and now realize that I have opened up a can of worms because there is no quick fix for this. Since this is a somewhat common occurence (combining PDFs) I would have thought that Acrobat could do this seamlessly.

Try to put your pdf with Acrobat 4, because acrobat 4 is less sensitive of acrobat 5

You are right that Acrobat 4 doesn't put that message out. But, worse,
it will go ahead and combine PDFs with clashing fonts, leading to text
changes and drop-out...

Do you know where it is possible to download and older version of Acrobat such as Acrobat 4?

There is a very simple fix for this. Recreate your single-chapter PDFs, embedding all fonts *without* subsetting. They will then combine without any problem.

To combine several PDF files into one large PDF file, you might want to try the following:

1. Open Chaper 1;
2. Click "Document" from Adobe Acrobat Menu bar;
3. Select "Insert Pages..." from dropdown menu;
4. Key in filename of "Chapter 2" then click "Select";
5. Make proper selections on "Insert Pages" dialog box then click "OK".

If you don't have the originals anymore, create ps files of all the seperate pdf's, by saving them as ps files.

Then follow solution 2 from the link Suzanne posted: <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/ca62.htm>

It's much easier than it looks, really. This would be the quickest and easiest solution.

I got the same error message "These documents contain subset fonts that have the same name and cannot be merged."

My problem may be slightly different because I have bookmarks that I would like to keep.

Any suggestions?
