I got my MAME arcade up and running 2 weeks ago but something I have noticed is that it keeps "forgetting" the buttons/joysticks I have set up. Its easy to fix. I just hit tab on the keyboard to bring up the controls, and set them up again. It mostly effects player one joystick up. However it has one a few occasions "forgot" all the controls. Anyone else have this happen? For what its worth im running MAME 0.153 and using hyperspin as a frontend.
I really new to this and need more tutorials any one no of any .im sure I haven't got it right in my head.i have downloaded mame 0.161 rom set and all 20 update packs .i point clrmamepro to rom set them point at each updat pack .keep doing this till the mame roms update to 0.181 .im totally wrong arnt I.im finding it really hard to understand what to do .
Thanks cid I'm had rom set 0.153 And could never get arcade stuff to work.so I downloaded full rom set 0.161 last night .then downloaded all the 20 update packs to 0.181 .renamed the mame set 0.153 as backup placed the new 0.161 set in new folder within roms.downloaded the emulator to run 0.181 .hopeing I have done this part right
i then moved onto clrmamepro and pressed create profile directly ,file name was my mame 0.161 roms.description mame 0.162,emulator mame.one I do this do I just keep going through 0.163,0.164,etc etc .
I bit the bullet today and decided to try and use clrmamepro to update my 177 rom set to 178 because apparently now the Capcom CPS2 roms requires a .key file. I have tried to use clrmamepro in the past but just gave up because it is such a pain in the ass.
I've noticed quite a few discrepencies however between Hyperspin's audit and clrmamepro's audit, using mame 0.153 dat files... for instance, Hyperspin seems to think it should have about 8000 roms, whereas clrmamepro wants to talk about numbers in the range of 30,000.
My question is, is hyperspin using the same naming scheme that clrmamepro will be using with its dats? Or am I going to have a massive effort after doing this to re-align these roms with hyperspin again? Unfortunately, hyperlist has xml files for mame but not dat files for some reason (anyone know why?) so I have to depend on dats from other locations, which makes me nervous.
Thanks for that boo, I suspected it would be something along those lines. So far I just have my hyperspin set up with the mame database included in the installer, should I be updating that to a "non-merged" set?
No, 0.181 is fine. If you are using windows, mameui64 has a nice interface. See the Mame Gorf topic for one recently updated file [ -gorf-on-mameproblems/?p=3663162]. For console emulation press tab to bring up the menu for loading cartridge roms. Are you having trouble with older games or newer games? Give us some examples.
All those games load and play here and I'm using an old 0.153 rom set with mame 0.181. Although a couple of them have known issues they still load and play. Since you're using Windows, mameui64 does make things a little easier.
Okay, what do you mean by "0.153 rom set" and where can I get that? Is it a whole bunch of arcade roms that were made for version 0.153? And I tried downloading that file from mameui but it had some 7z extension or something that my computer couldn't open.
I think the mame 0.153 rom set is a set of roms that someone packaged together when that version of mame came out. These sets can be 30to50 GB large. If you do a google search now for a "mame rom set" you'll probably find a more up to date set (eg. _0_161_ROMs). Or you can download them individually at one of those rom file sharing sites.
Okay, so I download version 0.164 of mame for the dig dug game that says "Dig Dug (rev 1) ROM M.A.M.E. - Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator/MAME 0.164 ROMs" on the page at Emuparadise and it still doesn't work and doesn't even bring it up in the list.
Right now, I just have a folder named "mame" on the desktop with all the files extracted to it. The roms I download from emuparadise I put in the "roms" folder in the mame folder. I'm just wondering if there's something else I'm supposed to be putting in that folder? I see things for BIOSs every once in a while, and they say things like "you need this for the rom to work" but I haven't seen anything saying where to put those and the 1943 seems to work without anything extra.
Just don't upgrade to the latest mame right away. Let other people figure out the issues first. As previously mentioned the roms don't change that often, and waiting a bit gives time for those that have changed to make their way around. When you do upgrade keep the old mame running. Point both versions to the same roms folder seperate from any mame folder.
Try creating a folder in your Mame folder named "Roms" (C:\Games\Mame\Roms for example). You must place your roms in that folder for standalone Mame to work. Try again to start the game by manually double clicking the mame.exe, If should work. If not, the issue is not with GameEx, it is with your mame/rom installation. Have a search around to sett it up correctly, verify it works and come back here to finish setting up GameEx.
Something you may wish to consider is obtaining a verified full ROMset. While it is big and has a bunch of crap (like porn, hacks, bootlegs, gambling, and etc) this does remove the guesswork out of MAME. You know that your roms work with the version of mame it was verified for. Moreover, it allows you to take advantage of the filters built into GameEX and you can always create your own custom list (Like "My Mame Games") and disable all the rest of the fields. This way it would only display the games you want, even though you have a full set.
To answer your question, in order to open the game you must create a folder in the mame root directory called "roms". Then all your zipped roms and any necessary CHDs must go in that folder. Then you can double click the MameUI64.exe to start the GUI. What game are you trying to run? Find it in the list. Highlight it, just as 1941 is highlighted above, and either press enter or double click it. If the rom is ok the game should run, if not there should be an error message that explains why (like rom files are missing or no CHD was found). This is how to verify that you have a working rom.
Ok, I have a full ROMset that has it and I copied it over to a roms folder in MameUI64 0.153. When I tried to load it, by searching the list for "primal", it tried to load but said that there were a bunch of bin files missing. However, when I load it from my GameEx list (full set) it loads and plays fine. My guess is that Mame is pulling the required files from some other place in my romset (other roms, bios, IDK). While it doesn't matter in other emulators, Mame seems to be very picky about things like this. This is why a full set comes in handy, these kind of weird things don't happen as much since Mame has all the other games to pick and choose from for ubiquitous bin files. I have no idea which other games are required to be in the roms folder to get it to work, but If you get a full romset, this issue should clear up. I would prefer just being able to put the games I want into a folder and have them work like every other emulator out there.
I just downloaded the newest version of mame 0.176b -64bit and tested it with 1941.zip from a 0.161 verified version, it worked with nothing else. I just extracted it and copied 1941.zip over, it worked.
I agree with RedDog that this sounds like a version mismatch. I suggest you find another source for your game or use a version of mame closer to your rom. For example, my complete rom/chd set was verified with Mame 0.161, so ideally I would use Mame 0.161. Which is where this site comes in handy, it keeps active DL links for previous versions of Mame. I've used 0.153 and 0.176 without issues, but it is more likely I will experience problems for certain games by doing this. So to remember which version my romset is verified for, I call the folder I keep them in "0.161 Full Rom/CHD set".
In any case, I recommend that you do more research on Mame from the abundant sources of good info available. Then once you're up and running with mame outside of GameEx, come back and we'll get you sorted out on the Frontend side of things. I'm not trying to get rid of you, there's just nothing more we can do to help until you have compatible roms (which we can't help with due to forum rules).
