"Acrobat has unexpectedly quit"

The application (v5.0.5) no longer runs when I go to open PDFs, including when I try opening the application (or Acrobat Reader) directly.
I've trashed the folders from my Applications folder, and reinstalled, but this doesn't seem to change things. I don't know if it's related or not, but, after reinstalling, I've also lost my Internet Explorer preferences. I'm running OS 10.2.3.
Any idea as to why this happens, or how it can be fixed?

This will seem very strange, but it may work:

Open the System Preferences, and click on the International pane. On the Language tab, rearrange the bottom two languages on the list, then close System Preferences. This recreates a language preference which can keep Acrobat from launching.

Geez... I got really psyched up reading all these notes, but my Acrobat Reader 5.1 running under OS 10.2 STILL continues to "unexpectedly quit" every time I try to open it. I've rearranged the last two languages in the international pane, then rearranged some more, then deselected almost all of the languages, then sprinkled chicken blood... nothing. Any other bizarre yet promising ideas on how to solve this dumb issue?

Chris, I have the same problem as you, running OS 10. 2 and AR 5.1. Did the same as you with the languages (noticed that the chicken blood didn't help yours so I skipped that one). Spent several hours on this website looking for answers, none to be found. I've had this problem for 3 weeks already, seems there's nothing you can do but wait for either Apple or Adobe resolve this. You could upgrade to 10.2.3, which sounds like it works but from all the negative posts about 10.2.3 I've read on Apple's forum, I've chosen to wait for the next upgrade. So here seems to be the options

1.) Hang until some hot-shot comes along here with another "bizarre" idea that works.

2.) Adobe comes out with a patch for 10.2

3.) Upgrade from Apple to 10.2.3 and take your chances

4.) Wait for 10.2.4 (which may or not solve this problem)

The language switching solution won't work for Acrobat Reader 5.1 (we added a 'fix' to 5.1 so that it's not affected by the language bug-a-boo).

However, I have no idea what could be causing the AR 5.1 issue. If someone could post a crashlog, I could take a look.

What's a crash log?

In the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder, you'll find an app called "Console". Run that. When it's running, choose Preferences from the Console menu. In the Preferences dialog choose the 'Crashes' tab. Check the 'Enable crash reporting' checkbox.

Now, make Acrobat Reader crash (unexpectedly quit) at launch. You should then find a file called 'Acrobat Reader.log' (or something similar) in the Logs folder in the Library folder in your Home directory.

Paste the contents of that log file into the forum. It might not help one bit, but it's worth a try.

Egads. Well, it's crashing in the OS, not in Acrobat code.

From the crash it looks like a bad font issue. Try removing any fonts you added and see if the problem goes away.

I think I am having a similar problem. I'm using OS 10.2.3 on a G4 Powerbook, and when I try to open a file in Acrobat 5.0, the prgram just unexpectedly quits. This also happens with InDesign 2.0. I am also having trouble with Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7. I can open files in them, but if I double click on anything while I'm working in the program, it quits and dissapears. There isn't even that "this application has unexpectedly quit" window.

I finally fixed my problem. Hope this helps someone else:

Vince told me that it looked like a font problem, so I contacted Extensis (I use suitcase to manage my fonts). They suggested deleting my suitcase prefs (in user, library, prefs - com.extensis... and the whole suitcase folder). He also suggested purchasing Font Doctor since I have so many old fonts. I deleted the prefs and ran Font Doctor. Then I kept getting an error that the fonts were missing when I tried to create a pdf. I compared my Base 14 fonts in Distiller to what was in my system 9 font folder and found they weren't all in the folder. I put them back in the folder, restarted and viola - it works! Hope this helps someone!

My acrobat suddenly developed this problem. I tried the language shufle to no avail. About the only thing that has worked is removing the Infusion, Reflow, SaveAsRTF, Spelling and WHA plug-ins from the Acrobat plug-ins folder. This lets Acrobat launch, but God knows what it does to the application's functionality.
Anyone got any ideas?

Try removing just WHA. Of the list you provided, it's the most likely candidate for launch-time problems. Removing it also removes the least functionality.

I have OS 10.2.4 and Acrobat 5.05 and cannot open html or text, for example (and get a crash), although jpg happened to work. I'll post a stack.

I'm running 10.2.4 and I have the *strangest* problem with Acrobat 5.0.5:

It keeps crashing on launch, and I can't get it to run anymore. (BUT: It runs perfectly well in Classic???)

As with others here I tried the 'Languages' suggestion but this didn't work(I've used MonoLingual to remove all foreign languages that I don't ever use). I re-installed Acrobat and then looked at the Crash Log....even though my machine restarted without apparent error it claims the actuall installer had a problem. Can anyone explain this:

The language-switching fix seems to solve another crashing problem. Although the problem launched well, I had been having problems with Adobe crashing when I open webpages to capture them as pdfs. I tried the language solution and no crashes since, fingers crossed.

Any news on updating some of the classic only features for OS X? I miss the ability to index my pdf collections.

THANKS FOR THIS FIX!

I've uninstalled all my Adobe products trying to work this out, reinstalled, and only had the problem with Acrobat 5 afterwards. It was driving me bonkers!

I didn't even install foreign (to me) languages the last time I installed OS X. swapped the bottom two on the System Preferences list, and I'm back to Acrobat ok. Thanks to all...

One more random victum. Even 10.2.4 doesn't fix it. Actually it made it worse. It was working fine under 10.2.2 Apple couldn't fix it said it may be Adobe's problem. I bet Adobe says it Apples problem, while we all swing in the breeze

Although there is a lot of time nobody post in this thread, I would lik to know if is someone there that can help. After working for a long period, Acrobat Reader started displaying the "unexpected quit" message. I've gone through all suggested steps (but the chicken blood) and still cannot open Acrobat Reader -- only in Mac OSX, it works perfectly in Mac OS9. It's the only application that has a problem, every other one is working flawlessly. Here follows the crash log, as there are some gurus out there that can figure what it means...

Thanks Jon. I have removed some fonts I thought were not necessary (non ocidental alphabets) from Lybrary/Fonts. After putting them back and also "cleaning" the Fonts folder in Classic, it came alive again. Only problem now is with my old Distiller 3. It doesn't work in the Classic environment...
