Dave is correct – the SMC, EMCI and LMCI categorizations were just used at screening. SMC are still cognitively normal, so from a diagnosis perspective, they are normal. Similarly, EMCI and LMCI are both MCI, so from a diagnostic perspective, we just consider them to be MCI. We used the distinctions at screening so that we could ensure a spread of impairment in the MCI group (SMC were added a bit later in ADNI-2 to capture individuals with memory concerns, but still cognitively normal, since this was becoming a group of interest).
