Hi,
I am currently working with ADNI4 data for a research project that involves analyzing cognitive performance, particularly focusing on MoCA and RAVLT scores. However, I have encountered substantial missingness in MoCA and RAVLT data for several ADNI4 participants, including those with complete MMSE records.
I have checked the standard datasets such as ADNIMERGE.csv and MOCA.csv, but they do not appear to include complete MoCA scores for ADNI4, especially for the remote digital cohort. I have also attempted to locate supplementary files such as UWNPSYCHSUM.csv, ADNI4_NEUROBAT.csv, or any updated cognitive summary files that might contain the missing data, but was unable to find them in the portal.
Could you please advise:
  1. Whether a complete MoCA dataset is available for ADNI4 participants, including those in remote or digital subcohorts?
  2. If so, which file(s) should I download?
  3. Are there alternative sources where these cognitive scores have been consolidated?
I sincerely appreciate your help in locating the most complete version of this dataset.

Hi Weina,

MoCA and RAVLT are only performed for those participants who are referred to the clinic, so will not be available for those only enrolled in the remote digital cohort.

As in other phases of ADNI, the “initial visit” is split between a screening visit and a baseline visit. The MMSE is done at screening, while MoCA and RAVLT are performed at the baseline visit. It is possible that some of those missing MoCA and RAVLT have not yet come in for the baseline visit (or they didn’t go beyond the screening visit).

Danielle

Hi  Danielle,

Thank you very much for your helpful explanation regarding the availability of MoCA and RAVLT data.

However, I have not been able to locate the RAVLT data specific to ADNI4 in the datasets currently available for download. Could you kindly let me know where I can find the RAVLT data for ADNI4 participants, or which file(s) I should download to access it?

Additionally, I noticed that some ADNI4 participants have undergone MRI scans but do not have accompanying MoCA or other cognitive assessments. Is this expected for certain participants, or might these be incomplete data entries?

I really appreciate your support and guidance.

Best regards,
Weina

Hi Weina,

The RAVLT variables (trial scores, etc.) are in NEUROBAT.csv. You can refer to the data dictionary for the specific variables and what they represent (such as AVTOT1).

Hi Weina,

I realized I missed your question about MRI. MRI is also done at the screening visit, while the bulk of the neuropsych battery is done at the baseline visit.

Hi  Danielle,

Thank you for the clarification.

As a result, it's expected that some participants may have MRI data but no corresponding cognitive assessments if they didn’t proceed to the baseline visit — is that correct?

Best,
Weina

Yes, that is correct. Baseline visits could happen several weeks after the screening visit, just due to challenges in scheduling assessments, but if it has been a while since the screening visit and no information from the baseline visit exists, it is reasonable to assume the participant did not go on to the baseline visit.

Got it — thank you very much for the clear explanation. That really helps clarify the data structure.
