Hello,
I have a question regarding how noisy are the freesurfer volume data ?
I have found 16 of patients that have an *increase* bigger than 10% of Hippocampus vol between 2 consecutive visits.

See below for consecutive visits:

months Hippocampus
m0 9405
m3 8709

m6 7465

m12 8546
m24 8848

In some cases as above, the values go up and down again...

See below for ventricle/icv:

is this normal ??? How can such noisy dtta be used ? Is there referejnce / literature on such levels of noise ?

Thanks !

Mathilde

Hi Mathilde,

In my experience the hippocampal parenchymal fraction (HPF) is much more sensitive than FreeSurfer (or otherwise) hippocampus volumes for tracking subtle hippocampal changes over time.  It takes less than a minute to compute it, as opposed to several hours it takes to run FreeSurfer.

Hello Babak
Thank you for your quick reply.
I have been able to find the paper introducing the HPF, I think it is:
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.3233/JAD-150780
But no code :/
How would one go about to calculate this HPF? Is there code available somewhere, a software ?
Thanks a lot !
