Q: I recently performed a Windows update and when Windows loaded again all of my personalizations and some of my programs were missing from my desktop. In fact, it looked a lot like it did when I first purchased the computer a couple of years ago. How do I get those items back and get my desktop back to normal?

Sometimes, after Windows performs an update and requires a restart, the operating system loads a temporary profile instead of your actual one just to ensure stability. When that happens, the profile that appears tends to be bare bones or similar to what you saw when you first purchased the computer.

Rare as it is, if you even find yourself unable to recover your Windows profile, please know that the settings are still there, however Windows (either via update or other corruption) has become unable to locate and/or associated it to your login. In that case, you will need to manually reinstate the profile. The steps to do this can be found in the main solution posting on this Microsoft Answers forum page: -us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-my-user-profile-wont-load/1aee2afb-361a-4963-b4af-b2eeea89f8bd

Q: I read your September 13, 2020 article regarding FastStone Image Viewer. After downloading I saw that the company was requesting a donation in order to receive a registration code that allowed me to use the program. I thought it was free to use? How can I load it and not pay to use it?

A: FastStone Image Viewer is a photo organizer and editing application that lets you catalog and touch up your digital photos easily. It is available for download at faststone.org and the basic version is indeed free to download and install.

The catch here is that the download link covers installation for both personal/educational and commercial use. If you select "commercial use" during installation, then you will be prompted to donate to the company in order to receive a registration code for use. If you select "personal/educational use" then you will not.

So to keep the program free to use, please uninstall the existing title from your system and then re-install it, this time selecting "personal/educational use" during re-installation. Both versions are the same, it should be noted, so you are not limiting the program's capabilities by selecting "commercial use" over "personal/educational use."
