Description

December 20-21, 2025: Catskill Winter Peak Bagging Backpack. Trip Rating = A+
General Description: This trip is intended for experienced winter backpackers only, and will involve one nite in the field. Only those individuals who have the appropriate winter backpacking experience, and the appropriate winter gear (e.g. cold weather sleeping bag/pad(s), snowshoes, microspikes, clothing, etc.), will be allowed to participate. Catskill High Peaks that will be summited include Table, Lone, Rocky & Peekamoose. On Saturday morning 12/20 we will leave Rochester via. carpool and drive to the Denning Rd. parking lot. From the parking lot we will backpack in to the lean-to on the Peekamoose-Table Trail. The LT is about 400' below the summit of Table. Mt.. We will spend the nite either in the LT or our tents. Saturday’s hike will be approx. 3.3 miles with 1,700' of climbing elevation. On Sunday 12/21 we will hike in order: Table, Lone, Rocky, back to Lone, Peekamoose, back over Table, back to the LT to pickup gear, then out to the parking lot. Sunday’s hike will be approximately 9.8 miles with 2,700' of climbing elevation. There is a herdpath from Table to Lone to Rocky, but it is poorly defined in sections and there will be some bushwhacking. We will drive back to Rochester on Sunday, returning that evening (hopefully not too late). Note that because we will be starting our hike on 12/20, a day before the 2025 winter solstice, I checked with the Catskill 3500 organization to see if Table, Lone, Rocky & Peekamoose would count as Catskill 3500 winter peaks based on the above itinerary. They responded back to me in the affirmative. Dogs are not allowed on this trip. All participants will be required to sign ADK’s Release of Liability Form, which will be available to sign at the trailhead. The deadline to sign-up is December 12th. The trip will be limited to a maximum of 6 participants. If interested in participating and to learn more, contact Reinhard Gsellmeier at GSEL...@gmail.com.
