Dear Minister Prakash Javadekar
I am extremely concerned about reports of the recent public hearing for the Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha, where the strong opposition of local tribal people was ignored and the hearing was declared a ‘success’ for the company. I urge you to investigate the hearing and not to accept the official account.
To allow the expansion of the refinery would be to reward illegal corporate activity because the works were started without permission, the public hearing was not conducted according to the law and the expansion would threaten the Niyamgiri Hills where the Dongria Kondh have expressly refused to give their consent to a mine. Please, therefore, do not grant clearance for this expansion.
Yours sincerely,
