8 Things to Do to Commemorate Indigenous Peoples
on Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus arrived as an immigrant to "the New World." He did not "discover" America. He was not a hero, he was a war criminal. Today, let's remember and celebrate the Peoples who were here first!

For the first time this year, Seattle and Minneapolis will recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day.  The cities join a growing list of jurisdictions and schools choosing to shift the holiday's focus from Columbus to the people he encountered in the New World and their modern-day descendants. We can all take example from these cases and take action for change. #AbolishColumbusDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay

2. Celebrate Indigenous Leaders

Columbus Day is obsolete. This year, we are joining First Peoples Worldwide in celebrating Indigenous Leaders Day. We think it's time to celebrate Indigenous accomplishments, Indigenous leaders, in our Indigenous voices. Ditch Columbus Day, celebrate Indigenous Leaders Day.

  • Nominate your favorite Indigenous leader. Send an email to communi...@firstpeoples.org stating your leader's name, accomplishments, tribal affiliation, community in which they work, and why they inspire you. Be sure to include a picture.
  • Share your nomination on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #IndigenousLeaders
  • Change your social media profile and cover photos to:

3. Recognize and Remember Indigenous Leaders Who Have Been Murdered

Today take the opportunity to recognize and remember Indigenous leaders who have been murdered and disappeared while doing work to defend the lives of their families and their environment. There are too many to even count, like Daniel Pedro Mateo from Guatemala.

4. Take Action by Getting Involved in the Native Anti-mascot Movement
There are still more than 1,000 high school, university and professional teams that continue to have Native American mascots. Though changes have been made at the high school and college levels, at the professional level there has been virtually no change. Start the change in your community. Check out our Abolishing Racist Native Mascots: A Toolkit for Change.

Dear Friends,

Regarding Celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day in India, there are some issues all educated and intellectuals may focus on the reality of situation of India and Maharashtra,
1] Govt of India is not in favor of concept of Indigenous People
2] Govt of India refused to define as Indigenous People to the Adivasi people before UNO Indigenous Population working groups.
3] Our intellectuals keeping silence on SC Judgement of Bhill  Nandabai which leading universal truth of elements Indigenous status of Adivasi people.
4] Maharashtra Govt./  particularity tribal department making fool on this  and spending money of tribal welfare  on their political befits instead recommending to pass the resolution for making LAW in Parliament and Legislation of State.
5] Constitution not saying as Adivasi to Adivasi  and imposing  concept of scheduled Tribes without parameters and definition, which is slavery code  of European theory and arises from discover theory of Columbus..
6] Mr Sachin satvi may focus lights on such serious issues instead of blindly adoptions.

Yours Sincerely,

MADAVI L K
NAGPUR
