Hi *,

with the growing adoption of the Alta UI Patterns in ADF applications one question recently came up whether
the "Dynamic Tab Shell" pattern should be remained or redesigned (with appropriate Alta UI patterns) when transitioning to more lightweight and mobile friendly UIs?

My first impression was that the dynamic tab shell pattern should not be used in Alta UI designed apps - mainly because it adds more complexity and is not that much mobile friendly. On the other side some "expert user UIs" might need this pattern to work in parallel on different "context objects" or maybe using the tab shell to create a single context by opening corresponding objects per tab.

What do you think? Should we ban "dynamic tabs" from Apps following the Alta UI principles or are there still use cases for this pattern (in a mobilized world) ?

Looking forward to your opinions.

Best Regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
Good question!  There is a shift away from dynamic tabs in our simplified apps.  In a mobile scenario especially, the optimum design is to present the task that needs to be done right then and can be done quickly.  While we haven't "banned" them for the productivity apps that are typically used on a desktop, you'll start to see less and less of them.  Interesting enough, the desire to use dynamic tabs is typically based on the perceived need for multi-tasking, but when we dive in a bit deeper, we have a hard time finding other than the exception case where a user would really need to have more than a few tabs open in the same application.

My 2 cents.

Regards,
Laurie

Hi,

Good question Andreas, I have been thinking about this topic lately. As you two said, I think the tabs shell with the Alta UI patterns is not the best approach for a mobile page.

Anyways, I have a case now where I want to have the shell and the mobile is not a requirement so I guess I will use the UI Shell pattern's classes and redesign its page template.

Cheers, Pedro.
