Here is an old version for OSX Server. But it cannot work on my MacBook with OSX 10.8.

So the VM may the only solution.

Hi guys,

I want begin to develop to mobile using ADF Mobile but I need the database to make some samples. I'm using Mac OS and I don't find a oracle version to Mac.
I needed install Oracle Express without using VM.

Can anybody help me?

You say "without using VM" but the advice that I can personally vouch for (having done it successfully last week) does involve using VirtualBox.

This is what I got running with zero problems last week:
  • My mac mini runs Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8.2
  • I installed the latest version of VirtualBox for Mac 4.2.4
  • I installed the latest Ubuntu server version 12.04.1 LTS into this VirtualBox
  • I followed the exact steps outlined by this handy article I found googling around:

Including following exactly the steps about how to partition the disk that Scott M. Ball gives above instead of the way that's referenced in the two articles below. (Perhaps both ways work fine, but I only personally tried Scott M. Ball's way).

Which adds a few instructions on top of the very detailed, two-part article by another person:

I have dedicated only 512MB of RAM to the VirtualBox and took the defaults on the size of the virtual disk (which going from memory was like 8GB I think).

I use the VirtualBox feature to startup the VM in "headless" mode so there is no UI showing related to VirtualBox at all, and I can ssh into the Ubuntu box running my Oracle DB as needed.

It is working fine to connect to it from JDeveloper, SQL Developer, and other tools from my Mac directly.

I can attest to Steve's approach here. I set up something very similar
last year on VMWare Fusion
(http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/installing-oracle-xe-on-ubuntu-1010.html)
and it runs so well, with such a small footprint, I haven't bothered
upgrading any part of it.

There is another route, you can go with Oracle's prebuilt images:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html

....which include the database and other software. However you do need
a machine with a fair amount of memory & general grunt.

In terms of the general approaches to using VMs (especially with Virtual Box), you may also find Vagrant


to be a useful tool for 'building' VMs as needed; especially if you have a team of developers.
