In design, New Wave or Swiss Punk Typography refers to an approach to typography that defies strict grid-based arrangement conventions. Characteristics include inconsistent letterspacing, varying typeweights within single words and type set at non-right angles.[1]
Wolfgang Weingart is credited with developing New Wave typography in the early 1970s at the Basel School of Design, Switzerland.[2][3] New Wave along with other postmodern typographical styles, such as Punk and Psychedelia, arose as reactions to International Typographic Style or Swiss Style which was very popular with corporate culture.[2][3] International Typographic Style embodied the modernist aesthetic of minimalism, functionality, and logical universal standards.[5] Postmodernist aesthetic rebuked the less is more philosophy, by ascribing that typography can play a more expressive role and can include ornamentation to achieve this.[5] The increase in expression aimed to improve communication.[4] Therefore, New Wave designers such as Weingart felt intuition was just as valuable as analytical skill in composition.[3] The outcome is an increased kinetic energy in designs.[3]
The complexity of composition increased with the New Wave which transitioned well into computer developed graphic design.[2] Complexity came to define the new digital aesthetic in graphic design.[2] April Greiman was one of the first graphic designers to embrace computers and the New Wave aesthetic is still visible in her digital works.[3]
Dan Friedman, an alumni to Wolfgang Weingart, Attended Carnegie Mellon University, and studied abroad to Ulm, Germany to get his Master's in Graphic Design. Ulm started becoming unstable, forcing Friedman to transfer to Allgemeine Gewerbeschule, Basel in Switzerland.[10] That is where he was instructed by Weingart. Friedman then started teaching graphic design full time at Yale in 1969.[10]
April Greiman is a contemporary American Graphic designer. Like Weingart, She is one of the first designers to use technology in her work. She is recognized for introducing "New Wave" into the U.S.[11]
As a student, Greiman attended Kansas City Art Institute, then, in the 70's, went to Basel, Switzerland.[11] She became a student at the Basel School of Design and was taught by Wolfgang Weingart.[11] She then inherited the "New Wave" design style.

Jan Eismark and his colleague Michael Balthasar came up with the new wave design, which has now been patented. However, cutting-edge technology was needed to prove that their initial ideas were correct and to determine the exact design of the piston crown. This entailed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and filming the combustion process inside the cylinder at high speed.
The result of their work was the inclusion of ridges or waves in the piston crown. The piston has six of these ridges and the injector, which is located in the center of the cylinder at the top of the piston, has six orifices to ensure the fuel is sprayed between the ridges that lead the flames into the center.
It must be possible to manufacture any new design cost-effectively in order for it to be used in production vehicles. A large amount of work has gone into developing the piston manufacturing methods to achieve the right balance between the cost of the parts and the benefits for customers. This was followed by thousands of hours of testing to refine the design and verify the durability of the new concept.
The three volumes above bring together a wonderful selection of wave and ripple designs produced by the Japanese artist Mori Yuzan, about whom not a lot is known, apart from that he hailed from Kyoto, worked in the Nihonga style, and died in 1917. The works would have acted as a kind of go-to guide for Japanese craftsmen looking to adorn their wares with wave and ripple patterns. The designs would have found their way onto swords (both blades and handles) and associated paraphernalia (known as "sword furniture"), as well as lacquerware, Netsuke, religious objects, and a host of other items. The Wave Designer allows you to increase or decrease the attack and/or sustain of signals. It does this a bit differently than a compressor but in a very similar way. The Wave Designer rather than focus on a threshold uses the shape of the waveform (envelope) to make its adjustments on the signal.
The attack control allows us to increase or decrease the initial transient of the signal. Below are examples of the waveform of a Kick Drum and Snare Drum where the attack was increased to 100% and the gain was dropped significantly to reduce levels as to not clip the waveform. We can see a decrease in amplitude on the decay, sustain and release of the waveform because of the reduction of gain.
