Nope. You are, like the rest of us, SOL. Don't feel bad, though, I've
had two stolen this year and even if I replaced them, my insurance
deductible is more than the cost.

Maybe Adeona has some legal liability for your laptop and your data as
they made a lot of promises to alot of people that they can't keep?

I doubt that, they state time and time again that Adeona is not ready for use, hell right on the main page it flat out states:

WARNING

Adeona is currently not working because the back-end service (OpenDHT on PlanetLab) is proving to be unreliable. If you would like to help us, please subscribe to the adeona-developers mailing list and see this initial post. Users may wish to subscribe to adeona-users for announcements.

any Judge would laugh at you and throw the case out.

I've been recommending http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/ to Mac users until Adeona is reliable.

I really wish Adeona would just add support for private servers. (FTP, SFTP, MobileMe, etc.)

I have Orbicule's Undercover and it worked as advertised when my
laptop was stolen in February.

I now have a vivid picture of some guy staring into my MacBookPro's
iSight computer from Hanoi, Vietnam. Fat lot of good that will do.

How long have they had that warning up? If I had seen it, I certainly
would have taken heed of it.

Since April 21st. Although the service had been silently non-
functional for several months at least before that.

Which is probably about the time we began to make noise about it. Had
it been up earlier, I surely would have never downloaded it and
expected it to work.

Orbicule.com is one alternative that i use. Another is MacTrak. I
think there's also one named Lojack.

Let us all know if there's something for Linux. I have a Dell Mini
running Ubuntu and would not mind something on it. My plan, however,
is NOT to put anything sensitive on this machine, only use it when I
travel for websurfing and Email.

you can even store your docs or sensitive infos in a hidden partition with truecrypt, but that's not an alternative, because it isn't a tracking software.. maybe dydns? is there something for that?

Hello,

My name is Ken Westin, I am the founder of GadgetTrak based in
Portland, Oregon. We are the makers of MacTrak and PC-Trak. I don't
mean to spam the list, but seeing as how people are having issues I
thought I would chime in and make an offer to folks. Our software is
not free, but we are offering a 50% discount to Adeona users who are
having issues. Our software provides a stable and secure
infrastructure and has some other features such as Wi-Fi positioning
which gets the location of the device within 10-20 meters. We also
provide recovery support and work with law enforcement to recover the
device. We currently support OS X and Windows.

http://www.gadgettrak.com/products/mac/

http://www.gadgettrak.com/products/pc/

We share a common philosophy with Adeona as we advocate privacy-safe
tracking, images and location are only sent to your email address and
your Flickr account directly from your system, it does not go to a
monitoring center etc.

To help folks I would like to extend a 50% discount to Adeona users
for the rest of the week, simply type in "adeona" in the promo code
field and it will provide a 50% discount, until the end of the day
Saturday. The discount code will also work with our mobile phone
software.

Again I apologize for the commercial offer here, but given the issues
folks are facing I thought a deep discount would be helpful.

Thank you

Ken Westin

I already have both Orbicule and MacTrak on two laptops.

Orbicule found my laptop that was stolen in February from my London
hotel room, but it was in Hanoi, Vietnam. Sent along a nice picture
of the guy using the computer. Fat lot of good it did me.

It'll be great if MacTrack, Orbicule, etc could somehow inhibit the operation of the stolen computer and display an owner-customized message to the thief.

Dave,

I think that is a special case, it would be interesting to see if the
device connects back in London at some point. We would have made an
attempt to contact the embassy and work through the authorities there,
if one device is recovered it may lead to others and reveal a larger
crimes being committed.

We found a lot of stolen phones that are stolen in London are shipped
in bulk to Russia and sold on the black market. In a few cases we were
not able to get the phone back, however were able to ensure that
sensitive data was wiped from the device.

I've been in touch with the London police and I presume they are doing
something with the info I sent them, including the picture.
