Folks,

So now we learn that Adeona doesn't scale. Important to note for
anyone who really needs and rely's on this type of service. But I
should also point out that the majority of stolen (windows-run)
computers are reformatted or have a new OS installed, post theft
(because the thief can't use the stolen device without reformatting
and putting in a new login password) so every theft recovery service
is rendered useless at this point (including Adeona)
- except one - (the inventor of the anti-theft category) ----
Computrace / LoJack by Absolute Software .

check out the only company that delivers true theft recovery services
and PERSISTENT software to consumers and commercial organizations...
And the PC OEM's have all supported Absolute's technology for years,
Absolute's anti-theft code is already loaded in the firmware of most
laptop manufacturers...

Why waste the time reformatting when windows passwords can be reset in about 5 minutes with the proper tools?, most thieves just want to get rid of the thing as fast as possible.

I have just finished testing Prey, a open source version that works
very nice. It emails the location information along with a picture if
camera is available.

Apple Mac BIOS support for computrace? Nope.

OS X Support for lojack? Yes, but does not survive drive re-format,
or HD swap.

I had no idea this existed. They are very vague of how it works.
(Install a binary in the OS after re-format? What if you install a
non-windows OS after re-format?)

You can provide additional protection for your mac though by setting
an EFI firmware password, which prevents booting from external disks
or DVDs and prevents hard disk reformat (and lots of other protections
against everything but a HD swap).

Glen - you're right Absolute Computrace LoJack DOES SUPPORT OS X
- (but not in traditional BIOS as we know that doesn't really exist in
the Mac world). But the firmware password is a great idea...

In the Windows world, Absolute"s Computrace / LoJack survives even if
the hard drive is removed because its in the BIOS of almost all PC
manufacture's laptops.
Also apparently they have recovered almost 10 thousand stolen
computers (over the past few years - so it definitely works) for their
customer base and have an actual Theft Recovery Team of ex-Law
Enforcement types - who get the notebooks back - proactively working
with local law enforcement. Now Absolute is working with Intel and the
Intel anti-theft initiative. Sounds like ant-theft as a fairly new
product category is about to get a lot more prevalent.
It's all on their web site www.absolute.com - pappase

pappase, Do you have a relationship with the company? Or have they
recovered a laptop for you? You seem pretty eager to talk them up.
THe cynic in me, says maybe a little too eager. No?
