Hi,

I've read all the messages about prey.
First of all, if you have a problem with it you can contact us through
our contact form (preyproject.com/contact).
Second, about the features you asks. ALL OF THEM, are planned to
future versions, but you'll have to be patient because, as we said,
this is an opensource project and we do because we want to, not cause
we have to. We do it in our free time, and all the features are under
development or waiting for release.
Third, it would be nice to launch all the features at once but for a
better experience, we will be launching them 2 or 3 each version.

The next version is very special because we will launch 4-5 features
to honor the feedback of our users and thats why it's been a long time
since our last release. If you are really impatient about getting the
new features you can always go to the repository (github.org/tomas/
prey) and get an unstable version.

As a opensource project your help is always welcome, so try it, you
won't lose anything.

Regards.
Prey Team

good for you if you don't find the application running.. it runs in the background.. better.. it runs in the backgroung every # seconds.. so the thief doesn't know it..

Haha, true =)  but how do the updates work? Are they emailed by the time period that you select in the setup?

No, for the moment you should check periodically their website, since it's a young project. To update just download the new installer package and run it. It will overwrite the last configuration.

My hesitation with Prey is actually part of why Adeona is appealing.
Personally, I'm not overly thrilled about the idea of having to store
yet another username/password on the computer and have it set to
contact my organization's mail server. With Adeona (provided we can
get it functioning again, it stores anonymous information encrypted
and the information is pulled by the user if they have the key. Given
Adeona's current state I'd say Prey is infinitely better but if I had
a choice between the two functional programs, I'd lean toward Adeona
for that reason if nothing else.

I'm not trying to take the wind out of Prey's sails. On the contrary -
in the absence of Adeona, it's looking pretty doggone attractive!

Cheers -

Joe.

well.. you're right, you said: "but if I had a choice between the two functional programs, I'd lean toward Adeona for that reason if nothing else." Prey is functional.. adeona for the moment isn't.

The fact that adeona stores personal infos in an encrypted format isn't an advantage.. maybe it's a disadvantage. You shouldn't need anyone to store your personal infos!

At the current state of art, the last release of Prey doesn't support file transfert encryption. The development release does (email encryption).. and of course it doesn't send your infos (even if encrypted) to anyone but you. With prey you have the complete control on what's happening. You, not planetlab.

Anyway if i had to choose between prey and adeona.. i'd choose prey. It's not planned to work, it works NOW.

It's working in windows too, but it's not developped anymore... and it's only in spanish..

The problem it's that we can't find a windows developper for the windows version, the old developper abandoned the project, so the only versions availables are for linux and osx. If you know of some windows developpers let him know about the project. There aren't many projects like this one opensource.

Ok.... So, I'm wondering about using Prey..... How do I know that it's working?? I think I may have asked this before, sorry if I did =S
I installed the latest version of Prey a few days ago, and found where it was installed, and looked around at the contents of the folders.... Is there a actual program/application that I should be seeing...? All I'm getting is encrypted text files... I don't know anything about program writing or tech stuff, so I'm a little lost =) Should I be seeing an actual window/program shell???

Thanks for any help +D

I set up a GoogleGroups named "prey-security" and I'm beginning to
think it should have been named "prey-users". That can be easily done
since I'm the only member of Prey-security.

What do y'all think?

Prey-Users sounds more applicable..... I don't think It matters that much =D

i think it mathers, and should be better to have our own google group.. anyway just to answear to alivia duran..

When prey is installed in your system you don't see it working in the background.. of course you shouldn't.. this may increase the suspects of thievs.. googlin' a bit he would find out what prey is.

The way it works is simple to understand.. it's simply called from the system at the time intervals you specified at the installation. For example every 60 mins it checks for the url, and then it mails you. To check if it's working or not just don't specify a url when you install it, it should automatically send you reports via mail.

Maybe i've not been clear.. if so just ask me to be more clear than now.. ahah! XD

Ok! Thanks very much =) So I CANT change settings after I've installed it? Also, I'm not getting any emails. Do I have to re-install Prey or can I fix that some other way?

i don't know where prey phisically goes installing in windows, if i knew you just should go to the installation dir and change settings, but i know that if you reinstall prey, then all the old settings will be overwritten, so the simplest way to change settings is to reinstall it.

you should find it in /usr/share/prey/ - there's a "config" file.. just set it as you wish.. i thought you were on windows..

On my MacBookPro, I needed to change the URL of the disappeared.laptop
and Prey Support told me to reinstall to change that setting. Done.
