I apologize if this offends anyone, but having looked at Adeona and
read this list, I'd like to offer a fresh perspective.
Adeona has great value -- commercial products are over-priced and
there is a real need to track stolen laptops, smartphones and other
devices.
There is great room for innovation, especially in the client software
-- that's the hard part -- solid client software that performs well.
But the system is down because of the back-end, which is obviously too
complex.
Perhaps we (if I may be so bold as to include myself) need to look at
simpler back-end systems that are easy to implement on a variety of
platforms. For example, while there are complex protocols availible,
you might be surprised to learn how much SMS traffic is transfered
using XML over HTTP and HTTPS because it is simple. Millions of text
messages to and from cell phones hitting CGIs running behind Apache --
because it is simple and cheap.
Getting servers and bandwidth is easy -- but the prospect of
implementing and maintaining needlessly complex back-end software
drives away potential participants.
Regards,
Eric
