"Praise the Lord!".... Psalm 112:1 "Praise the Lord Saints, I said, Praise the Lord Saints!" This declaration and challenge, shouted from my childhood church's pulpit, choir stand, or Mother Dora's 3rd row pew were often the first words proclaimed from the announcement reader to the testimony giver. I can still hear those words and see the jubilant flow of tears as sister Thatch shared how her "precious Jesus brought her through the storm". Grateful that this truth was seared in my soul, I immediately recognized in Psalm 112 the author beginning his song by shining light on the One from Whom all blessings flow, our precious Lord (James 1:17). As we dive into the blessings celebrated in this chapter (see previous post), it's essential to first, understand the Source of all we are, have, and will be, and secondly, unashamedly give Him the honor He alone deserves! In fact, right now, think of something God has done for you, or simply that He is God, and take a little time to praise Him. According to the Hebrew definition, praising means, "to shine, to flash forth light, to be boastful, to commend", and one of my favorites, "to make a fool of (oneself in the process of praising)"! Here are a couple ideas to get your praise-a-thon going:
Sing Him a song, this is where for some, the making a fool of oneself comes in!
Tell Him how much you love Him.
Write Him a letter expressing your gratitude.
Call or email a friend and share how He opened your eyes to a truth in His word.
When someone, anyone, shares something that has blessed them, say, "Praise God", reminding you and them where that blessing came from!
Dare to raise your hands at church, home or car (non moving please) when worship music plays, again, willing to look silly, perhaps standing alone!
For some, life is hard and there seems to be little to praise. Let Philippians 4:6-7 bring comfort, knowing that God knows and He will bring peace through your praise!
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
