Praise the Lord. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commands. Psalm 112:1 He was tired, beat down, even questioning life's purpose. Most in His world were incensed by the way He went about His days, stooping down to wash dirty feet, defying social/religious morays by working on days He should be resting, even giving peace to the most undeserving. Yet, because of the joy set before Him, He endured the shame, ridicule, and agonizing physical pain of a thorny crown piercing His skull, an 80 pound cross bar on His back, and stakes driven through His flesh and bone (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus was motivated to do the sometimes harrowing work of His Father not because He had to, but because He revered (Hebrews 10:7) and loved Him, and ultimately those He was sent to save (John 3:16).
What about us? What motivates us to live for God, to follow His commands? Is it the misguided notion that the more I do for Him, the more I'll get from Him. Or, are we trying to please our parents or friends? Perhaps fear drives you, believing that God's wrathwill fall if you even so think about missing church!
When we biblically fear God, respecting His position of supreme authority and recognizing ours as empty without Him, and love Him, cultivating intimacy, always cognizantthat eternal despair was ourdestiny had He not loved usdespite His suffering, then our doing for Him will flow from our love for Him. We will gladly partake of His sweetcommands (Psalm 19:9-10) and be rewarded with joys He has set before us!
