When you open a PDF in Acrobat or Reader and then click the "Fill & Sign" tool - it will show you the text tool, x, check mark etc ONLY if the PDF is NOT an actual form - it does not have fields that can be clicked into and typed without clicking the Fill & Sign tool... So for "Acroform" and "XFA" (Livecycle Designer forms) those tools will not show up, you can still use the Fill & Sign tool to sign the PDF but the fields in the form *should* be fillable just by clicking in them. Sometimes a form is only partially created, if there is even one "real form field" on the PDF Fill & Sign assumes it is a fillable form and does not enable the tools except for signing.

Print the document to PDF. When I do this and select the Fill & Sign tool I can access the checkmark, crosscheck etc again. No idea why it does this or why it works again when you print to pdf but it worked for me.

Although this works but it's more of a workaround if anything. Seems odd that we need to create a new pdf to be able to comment on the pdf. Is there no way to just re-save the pdf and strip the form data without using print to pdf?

I'm currently running into an issue with Acrobat DC's Fill and Sign feature for signing a document where any time I use fill and sign and type in ACC it crashes the entire program. I've tried running repairs on the program and uninstalling and reinstalling and it continues to do this. I'm trying to type in ACC because it is part of my job title but can't because it crashes after the second c is typed. It does not do this with any other AC combination, only ACC. It also doesn't matter if the letters are uppercase or lower case. It seems the letter combination itself is causing the crash. Has anyone come across an issue like this or know of a solution?

It's likely due to a bug in acrobat related to trying to prefill the text. I haven't found a way to turn off this stupid feature that keeps crashing adobe but it happens a lot. If you copy and paste the test it can get by it. Try typing "ACC " with the space and paste it into the box. The troubleshooting tips are just stupid. Sign into another computer account? How is that seriously a suggestion. Other option is to use the Edit tool and then add the text outside of the fill and sign tool.

This is still happening for me even after going through the steps you suggested. In my case it isn't related to specific characters as far as I can tell. It happens after the third or fourth use of a fill and sign feature. This didn't happen prior to the update I let happen a week or two ago. The first time I thought it was because I needed to reboot after an update, and today its well after that reboot. Both times I ended up having to print the forms, fill them in by hand, and then scan them back in. I pay for Adobe, and one of the few things I actually use it for isn't working. I can't begin to convey my disappointment.

I am still having exactly this problem I can't fill in more than a few fields without Acrobat crashing. I have tried reinstalling several times and even disabling the Auto Fill feature but yet it remains on and keeps crashing!

You found a fix and you will not share it with the rest of the world because....It will be fixed? GUESS WHAT?! It's not fixed. Why not share the fix so that we can do it ourselves because clearly your team has no clue how to fix it. This secrecy is beyond stupid! Over 9000 level stupid!

Hi - I am new to this community chat. I have the lastest update of Adobe DC 2020.012.20048 and experiencing the issues discussed. Each time I try to use the "Sign Document by typing or drawing signature" within minutes my Adobe crashes and completely shutsdown. IT spent countless hours running repairs, etc. and I am still having this issue.

When I open up ANY pdf the fill and sign tool is not either in shortcuts or the menu. I checked the security settings of the pdf and all permissions to adapt or sign were allowed. I tried using the tool and using the menu, but nothing happened at all.

Hey, for anyone wondering I found the fix for the missing Fill and Sign. Go to edit > Preferences and go to language. From here ensure that it is set to OS, for me it was Arabic and English, restart the application fully and boom. Fill and sign reappeared.

I did not get the tool back. It doesn't show when I search, it isn't in the tools section and nothing happens when I try manually through the signature icon or the E-sign category in the top navigation.

When you click the dropdown arrow next to a tool, you have the option to remove it. I searched, but couldn't find a way to get it back if it is removed accidentally, which seems a bit odd. If there is a way and I missed it, maybe staff will let us know. If not, we can add it as a feature request to User Voice.

Hello! Just to confirm I have two more cases with that issue. It was solved by changing the Language to the same as OS as previously commented.

I've lost so much time: removeing user from Adobe Admin console, recreating, adding proper license; nothing. Then uninstalling Adobe twice, completely, still nothing...

Thanks for the support in the community, this has been of great help.

This is a quite a big/strange bug indeed... Adobe needs to fix this

Kind regards!

Still the same issue in Feb 2024. Installed the latest Acrobat and Fill and Sign was missing, after setting the language as "same as OS" it just magically reappeared. Completely absurd that Adobe still hasn't fixed such a serious bug after several months.

If it weren't for your solution my only choice would have been to download & installed a pirated previous version of Acrobat, as signing PDFs is something I need to do almost every day.

Wake up Adobe!

March 7th 2024. DOES NOT WORK. The biggest load of BS is the fact that I JUST signed a doc with my saved signature and then opened another doc after and it was gone. Unreal. This is THE ONLY REASON I USE THIS PROGRAM ADOBE. THE ONLY REASON. Stop making your customers your unpaid QA team.

I have just had the same issue. Open a document in Acrobat. Get a message that the program has been updated and I need to reboot. Reboot. Open document again in Acrobat. No sign of "Fill & Sign"as an option except in "Customise Toolbar", where nothing that I try o change allows me to "Save""all I can do is "Cancel."

Im using a 5 year old computer with windows 8.1. My problem is that im using adobe acrobat fill and sign for applications, now for some reason it was working before and now when i go to save as. the box is not coming up to save it. I unistalled it and reinstalled it and its still not working. I went onto youtube and did some changes like going to edit then preferences then showing online storage when opening and saving files and something else and its still not working. I did try to make it a default program but its not coming on the box to the left, now please someone help me with this matter cause this has been taking me hours and its not resolved and im trying to get these applications over and done with once and for all

We're sorry for the trouble you had while using the Fill&Sign tool, please make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed, check for any pending updates of Adobe Reader from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating Adobe Reader and check.

Would you mind sharing the Adobe Acrobat version you are using? To check the version, go to Help > about Acrobat and ensure you have the recent version 23.001.2006x installed. To check the update, Go to Acrobat> Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once (you must save all the work before restarting)

If however you are in and have opened the filename_filled.pdf file as opposed to the filename.form file then that would be expected, once the form is saved as a PDF the fields are "flattened" and no longer editable.

Another option is that you are using Acrobat DC or Acrobat Reader DC and you have Signed the form and Saved changes. When working in Acrobat/Reader if you add a signature or initials to a form and then save the changes, the fields are flattened and no longer editable.

Thank you Josh! Yeah, I had done something stupid...downloaded page 1 with my filled in information, added a sheet, then hoped to edit what I'd typed on pg 1. Doesn't make sense. Thanks for your help with figuring this out!

Just to make sure you can help me, I was given a protected form by the office to fill in. I filled in the forms and then added my signature. Saved and filed. Then a few days later, I needed to make edits to the information I filled in. This time, it didn't not allow me to make any changes to my entries.

I've tried to save the document as anything other than pdf and then convert it back. It still didn't work. I've tried to "print" it to pdf unprotected, but it still saved as a protected file. it has a permissions pw, but i do not have it nor can i find out whose pw it was.

Yes, if you have signed the PDF and saved the changes it is flattened and you won't be able to edit so the best approach is to start with the original version of the PDF. Ideally you would not save over the original when saving the changes so that you have it to work with again.
