Netflix has made documentaries a priority in their movie selection, as you can see in our list of the 50 Best Documentaries on Netflix. The world of sports documentaries is no exception. From baseball and basketball to adventure sports like mountain climbing and base jumping, these movies and documentary series tell gripping, heartbreaking and just plain goofy tales that get to the heart of why we love sports. The athletes, adventurers and sports personalities here, along with the filmmakers who capture their stories are well worth celebrating.

To bring this love of the outdoors to our own homes, the staff at Backwoods Promotions took some time to peruse the popular streaming service, Netflix, and find some of the best outdoor documentaries about the off-road sports we love. We may not feel the wind in our face as we trek around the globe, but these films are SURE to leave you with a similar feeling. Overall, the perspective is impressive as we dive into the world of all extreme sports---some we know and some we are getting a first look into--and we look forward to hearing your feedback on your favorite nature documentaries as well:

2. Magnetic - Attracted to thrills across the globe, athletes from every background come together to surf the immense swells of Spain. The waves are some of the largest in the world. Men and women successfully compete and navigate the shoreline in this film. The swells alone give any viewer a rush of adrenaline, and truly put us all in awe of all forces of nature.

4. Pedal The World - This solo journey is one of true perseverance. Felix Starck takes us along on his 18,000 km bicycle journey across 22 countries. His perspective is very driven and along the way he makes the most unlikely of friends. Those in the communities he visits are supportive--and it takes a very personal and raw look into solo athletes in cycling.

6. Fearless - Rodeo circuits are a grueling and long road for those who want to make it to the PBR Finals in Las Vegas. This true story follows young men from Brazil (a powerhouse country in both the PBR Finals and NFR Finals in Las Vegas) as they risk it all for money, titles, and a road to the championship. For anyone wanting to learn more about the athletes who compete in this high stakes sport, we highly recommend it!

9. National Parks Adventure - Over one-hundred years ago areas of great natural beauty were declared protected by the government. Today a team of adventurers explore some of the most extreme spots of these national parks. This is truly an awe-inspiring and eco-conscious look into some of the oldest parks in the United States. Robert Redford takes a personal look into his favorite landscapes.

10. Unchained - The Untold Story of Freestyle Motocross - Narrated by Josh Brolin, this documentary takes a deep look into the rise of free-style motocross, one of the most extreme sports on Earth. This is an adrenaline fueled adventure right from your own home, that leaves you awe-inspired by the athletes that race. Truly the drivers are acrobats, and their bikes are some of the toughest in the world.

We hope that you take time to dive into the many stories of athletes across the world in these Netflix documentaries. The one-on-one interviews, the pressure of races and industry evolution, along with the forces of nature will leave anyone dreaming of their own next adventure. While watching them you may find yourself wrapped up in your favorite athletes, or forming your own opinion of the opposition. Feel like we missed one of your favorite outdoor documentaries? Let us know what films on Netflix, or any other streaming service, you enjoy and message us on Instagram or through our website.

The races we watch on television and the team interviews we listen to on podcasts are only half of what motorsport and extreme sport athletes go through to get to where they are. At Backwoods Promotions we are Enthusiasts First, but now we invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy the films that lie ahead on your adventure!

Netflix is the leading provider of streaming film in the world and it provides customers with access to some of the best sports movies in the world. Sports Illustrated has stated that there are many sports movies on Netflix in particular that sports and movie fans should see. There are five sports movies in particular that people should see.

One of the top sports films on Netflix is Glory Road. This film is based off of the true story of the 1966 Texas Western College basketball team. The film stars Josh Lucas as coach Don Haskins and focuses on much of the racial tensions that took place in that era. Haskins ends up coaching his team of players all the way to the national championship. This team ended up being the first team ever to win the national championship while starting five African American players.

For those that enjoy basketball, He Got Game is a great film to watch. The film follows Jesus Shuttlesworth, a top-ranked high school basketball player that is courted by dozens of top college programs and the NBA. The film focuses on all of the intense and controversial recruiting efforts by top college programs and NBA player agents. The film also showcases the relationships between the player and his father, portrayed by Denzel Washington, who has just been released from prison in an effort to persuade his son

While many college football films have a very serious tone, those that are looking for a comedy will enjoy The Waterboy. This film is one of the best sports movies on Netflix due to the great comedic timing and sequencing provided by Adam Sandler, who portrays Bobby Boucher. In the film, Boucher is introduces as a waterboy for a major college football program. He is eventually laughed off the field, but gets a job at a smaller program nearby. While there, he is accidentally thrust into a practice and shows a very unique ability for the sport. The film focuses on the lighter side of his life as he gets used to life on and off of the field.

See, the other appeal of these movies is that in an era of bloodless, softcore action blockbusters, The Equalizer delights in showing a viewer increasingly creative and gory ways in which to kill someone. Much like the heightened violence of Tarantino, the audience reaction is to laugh or even cheer with glee as all manner of objects get shoved into all manner of bodily cavities (and where there are no cavities, new cavities are created).

This week: Denzel Washington proves he can stick kick butt with a third Equalizer movie. I’ve got an extreme sports documentary you need to check out, and a bunch of crime movies I know you’ll love. In this week’s “Trailer Watch,” Austin Butler and Jodie Comer try to find love in a hopeless place…or at least the back of a motorcycle.

The appeal of “The Equalizer,” first as a TV serial in the 1980s and now as a trilogy of Denzel Washington-led action romps, is that an old man minding his own business sees injustice in the world and is capable of single-handedly punishing the bad guys for it.

What I find funny about Washington’s particular moral compass in all these movies is that it’s not exactly altruistic, and he’s not really very reluctant to activate into superkiller mode. He doesn’t care about making the world overall a better place. It’s personal. The aggrieved must 1) be vulnerable in some way, 2) show him some kindness, and 3) be wronged directly in front of him. Then he will go to extreme lengths to enact vigilante justice on the mob, gang or group that is tormenting that person.

As the opening action scene of this movie depicts — someone steals the $400,000 pension of a guy in the back of Denzel’s uber, he flies across the world and murders 30 people to get it back.

Of the three movies this is the quietest, and for long stretches one may not even realize it is an action movie. That’s because Denzel, whose character name is Robert McCall but let’s be honest it’s just Denzel, gets shot early on and is laid up recovering from his wounds. It’s a little bit like a superhero getting zapped of his powers, and as any superhero fan can tell you, that’s often the least cool part of any comic or comic book movie. Why have a Ferrari if you’re not going to drive it over 30 mph?

The reason why it works here is because he’s recovering in a tiny, seaside town in southern Italy, and above all the movie serves above all as a promotional campaign for la vita lenta — the slow life. Everywhere Denzel goes, he sees vulnerable people who show him kindness. So when the big bad mafia inevitably roll into town, suddenly this 68-year-old with a bullet wound is on the hook for the entire population. I’ll let you guess how that turns out for them.

Because we’re talking about Denzel Washington, the viewer could watch him sip tea (which he does probably a half dozen times) and not be bored. He’s still the most charismatic man in the business, still totally capable of convincingly pulling off action scenes and bringing real gravitas to otherwise silly talking scenes.

This is a true movie star performance in the purest sense. The franchise would not exist were it not for him, the IP itself is worthless and could not be rebooted with another actor. And yet with him, it’s out to $75 million and counting, after the first two movies did $190 million-plus.

I enjoy that these movies know what they are, and don’t try to be what they’re not. This third one messes around with a little franchise mumbo jumbo, trying to connect some characters from previous installments and make it seem weighty, but even if you’ve never seen the previous two films you’ll be able to enjoy it for the same exact reason that the super nerds will. It’s kind of the reliable TV serial version of a movie, if you think about it.
