Thank you Steve for bringing an important point about nomenclature.  'Volcano' is indeed listed by Adenium Center but it looks to be a rather inferior cultivar - has anyone flowered it yet?

I took some more photos of my cultivar this morning  - - which do you think most resembles a volcano?  My one has actual brilliant orange in the flower.  Priority of publication is the usual rule to validate a name but in this case I am not certain that this name has been published validly.  Opinions please.

Hi David -

Your flower is surely a beauty and a credit to your breeding program
particularly if it is unique and grows well. If you are asking me if I
prefer yours to the Thai 'Volcano', I do like the appearance of yours
more. I'm not enough of an expert to know if yours is unique or not. I
say this without knowing anything about the rest of the plant or its
growth habits or stability.

However, it remains confusing to me why you would want to have 2
different plants named 'Volcano'. Esteban (on the Yahoo Adenium Group)
has made it clear in a previous posting that when it comes to the
Registry (about which I am not commenting - only to his statement), it
is "first come, first served" (meaning to me that the first to
register gets the name). However, what is lost to me is the advantage
to having 2 plants with different blooms and likely different growing
habits having the same name, even if one is registered and one is not.
If this were to happen and one is unaware of a prior name, that may be
different. However, you are aware of the prior name whether yours is
superior or not and I truly doubt that the Thai growers of their
'Volcano' would back off and find a new name particularly when they've
already sold them. So, this would end up creating even more confusion
when it comes to distributing multiple plants with the same name.

I am not trying to be difficult or contrary. I guess I am just
struggling to understand the advantage of two plants having the same
name even if one may possibly be better than the other and one may be
registered. The confusion will remain particularly if buying off the
internet or when the plant is not in bloom since we are only seeing
the bloom.

Anyway, that's just my confusion. You've done a fine job in your
breeding program as it relates to interesting and even intriguing
blooms, and I do not question that at all. I appreciate your raising
the question in public so that there can be comments from others.
