Wood pick in cut ends

Saw on U-Tub where when they pruned , on cut end they inserted a tooth pick. Does anyone know why this would be done?

I can't remember for sure, but I think it had something to do with fanning the new roots when it roots.

This isn’t used spreading roots, tooth picks I inserted into cut ends of branches
