When micro-grafting, if you graft below the cotyledon then the seedling will form a caudex above the graft:

This is a seedling of 'Star of Yellow Dream' x 'Canary Bird' where the root was accidentally broken off.  As I had very few seedlings I micro-grafted it.

This is how I did it using the pink seedlings shown before, first cut the little roots off and make a V cut on the seedling:

Then find a rootstock with very narrow shoots, remember if you are using albino seedlings you must leave at least one green shoot on the plant.  If the rootstock is sufficiently narrow, it is only necessary to make a slit in it and not make a V which would be virtually impractical with such a narrow rootstock, then place the scion into the rootstock:

It would probably have been better to remove the cotyledons.  Then very gently bind the joint and seal with a plastic bag.

This shows the grafts before the plastic bags were placed over the grafts.  The central stem has not been grafted.

David and that CAUDEX will keep on growing, or is it only temporary swelling from abundance of nutrients from COTYLEDON?

Thank you for very instructive photos David,
I see you are using rubber bands to fasten the sprouts.  So no supper glue like cactus micro grafters.?
