I recently installed Astro Databank from a CD on a virtual Windows XP (using VirtualBox), and it works fine.  I'm quite happy with that.

So I tried to run the web update, and it downloaded 892 files successfully, but gave an error and would not update the program with the files.  (All the files show up in the update folder.)

Here is the error message that shows up:

And this is the error report that I could find:

At the advice of Alois I tried the instructions on

http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Astro-Databank:Software

although the error code listed is different.  These are the instructions:

From the Windows start menu, select 'run Program' and type: regedit
Search for this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Jet 4.0 (on some windows installation it may be at this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Jet 4.0)
and identify the value MaxLocksPerFile within this key.
select decimal values, and set the value to 200000 (two hundred thousand). Save and quit regedit.
Restart Astrodatabank, and run WebUpdate again.

However, after closing Astro Databank, editing the registry, and trying again, the same error occurs.

So can anyone suggest another way to get the downloaded files into Astro Databank?

Which version of ADB are you running?

I have only (limited) experience with version 4.

OK, good that you have 4.0.04 which is the latest version in existence
and the one I have.

The regedit fix I have recommended in the past fixes a design limit in
the Webupdate program which concerns the number of file locks. It is
likely that due to a bug the program does create locks but does not
release them.

Incresing the number of locks solved this.

It is possibly that you run into another problem, also related to some
kind of data overflow, which does not occur when one upates more frequently.

I am willing to try to find a solution with you, but I need your precise
cooperation in all steps.

Please do not make any other steps than what I recommend, and reply
carefully to all questions.

1. Go again to Tools-Webupdate and run it, until it fails.
It should download some more files, because I just now added the lastes
webupdate, dated of today.

2. Find the directory Astrodatabank4, probably in c:\programs or such.
There, list the content of the subdirectories

DataUpdate
and
WebUpdateData

you may do so by private email to me, not in the mailing list.
Please send the lists as a textfile.
(like going with the Windows commandline to the directory, typing dir >
listing.txt and then sending me the content of listing.txt)

3. Make a backup of these two directories with all files in them,
somewhere outside the Astrodatabank4 area.

In the next step, you will have to remove most of the files from the
active area, and edit one of them. It is important that you have a
complete backup of the two directories, before we start doing that.

4. Give me the highest Rcd ID number of the existing data records in
your ADB installation.
