Spectrum Summit at 4G World Conference Expo 2012: A Global Dialogue on Mobile Broadband

The 4G World Conference Expo 2012, held at McCormick Place in Chicago from October 29 to November 1, was the world's largest independent event covering the global technology and applications ecosystem for next-generation mobile broadband networks. Among the highlights of the four-day conference program was the Spectrum Summit, a special one-day forum that brought together regulators, operators, technologists and other stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities of spectrum resourcing for 4G mobile broadband.

The Spectrum Summit, which took place on October 30, featured a keynote address by FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, who shared her vision and policy recommendations for meeting the growing demand for wireless spectrum in the United States. She emphasized the need for innovation, collaboration and flexibility in spectrum management, and called for more spectrum auctions, sharing, unlicensed use and incentive mechanisms to optimize spectrum utilization.

The keynote was followed by a series of panel discussions that explored various aspects of spectrum policy and planning from a global perspective. The topics included:

    • The impact of spectrum scarcity on 4G network deployment and performance
    • The role of international harmonization and coordination in spectrum allocation and assignment
    • The potential of new technologies and solutions such as cognitive radio, dynamic spectrum access and white spaces to enhance spectrum efficiency and availability
    • The best practices and lessons learned from different regions and countries in spectrum management and regulation
    • The future outlook and roadmap for spectrum resourcing for 4G mobile broadband and beyond

The Spectrum Summit was attended by more than 200 participants from various sectors of the mobile industry, who engaged in lively debates and exchanges on the current and emerging issues of spectrum resourcing. The Summit provided a valuable opportunity for networking and knowledge sharing among the key players and influencers in the global 4G mobile broadband arena.

Some of the speakers and panelists at the Spectrum Summit included:

      • Robert Pepper, Vice President, Global Technology Policy, Cisco Systems
      • Chris Pearson, President, 4G Americas
      • Michael Calabrese, Director, Wireless Future Project, New America Foundation
      • John Leibovitz, Deputy Chief, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Spectrum Advisor to the Chairman, FCC
      • Robert Kubik, Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Samsung Electronics America
      • David Sumi, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, PCTEL
      • John Horn, President, RACO Wireless
      • Steve Sharkey, Director of Government Affairs and Engineering Policy, T-Mobile USA
      • Tom Petersen, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Standards Development, Ericsson
      • John Hunter, Director of Spectrum Policy and Planning Division, Industry Canada

The Spectrum Summit concluded with a keynote presentation by Berge Ayvazian, Senior Consultant at Heavy Reading and Conference Chair of 4G World. He shared his insights and analysis on the state of the global 4G mobile broadband market and the outlook for spectrum resourcing in the next decade.

The Spectrum Summit was part of the 4G World Conference Expo 2012's Special Summit Series, which also included the Small Cell Summit and the Mobile Cloud Summit. These concurrent tracks offered attendees a deep dive into the key topics and trends shaping the future of 4G mobile broadband. The 4G World Conference Expo 2012 also featured more than 200 speakers and industry leader keynotes, over 100 exhibitors and sponsors, and thousands of attendees from across the mobile ecosystem.
