Hi fellow adaptive practitioners,
You've been told to charge your worth.
In podcasts. In LinkedIn posts. From well-meaning mentors. Know your value. Ask for more. You deserve it.
And you do.
But here's what they never say: worth and rate are not the same thing. Telling a woman of color leader to just "ask for more" — without naming the inherited stories, the visibility gap, and the real economics of influence — isn't strategy. It's noise.
Here's the irony: we spend our days pushing donors to ditch rigid logframes, trust local context, and adapt as they go. We tell institutions their old models of control don't work anymore. Then the question turns to our own rate or salary, and suddenly we default to the same rigid, take-what's-offered thinking we'd never accept in a program design.
Maybe you're staff angling for a raise you've earned but haven't asked for. Maybe you're job hunting and dreading the salary conversation. Maybe you're a consultant who advises on adaptive management but hasn't adapted your own rate in two years. Maybe you're a director at an intermediary org who can pitch flexible, unrestricted funding to donors but goes quiet negotiating your own comp. Same underlying question: how do you talk about money when the system was never built to make that easy — even when your job is to make development itself less rigid?
That's exactly where we're starting on July 15.
