Branch 106 of the criminal court in the city of Zanjan has issued a six-months jail term and 50 lashes against an Azeri human rights activist identified as Yashar Hakakpour.
Mr. Hakakpour has been charged with printing false reports and making accusations against country’s official institutions through transmitting reports outside of the country and organizing a poetry night in honor of December 12 (21 Azar) in Zanjan University.
On January 21, 2006, Mr. Hakakpour, an ex-student activist, was detained by agents from the Ministry of Intelligence in the city of Maragheh, and after spending one month in detention, he was freed on an 80,000 USD bail bond.
Also, in another case, branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Zanjan sentenced the human rights activists to a six-month jail term for spreading propaganda against the regime.
Mr. Hakakpour believes that his civil rights activities are aligned with the human rights of the Azeri people in Iran, and his student-related activities, including setting up poetry nights, have been organized under the scrutiny of the oversight committee in Zanjan University; the printing of Ghizil Ouzoun and Zangan Suzlari are the main reasons for the issuance of such a sentence against him.
