Another tragic case of someone with autism being killed by the
emergency services. There is an urgent need worldwide for more
training for members of the emergency services in understanding the
nature of autism and handling its unpredictable manifestations. (An
interesting initiative was launched last year in Ottawa, Canada - an
autism 'registry' which has meant that, in a number of very real and
specific cases over the past few months, police and other emergency
services were 'primed' with knowledge of the individual's condition
before they arrived to deal with the incident and this proved very
helpful in calming the situation.)
