Although developing a family business sounds straightforward and beneficial, transitioning and expanding the business from generation to generation has many risks, challenges and complexities to consider.

Our family business, Lavi Industries, has been an established leader of manufactured and digital public queuing solutions for more than 45 years. From a young age, I was exposed to the people, innovations and leadership of Lavi Industries, which sparked a curiosity within me. Having pursued careers in marketing, real estate and other technology ventures, I realized my destiny was to join Lavi Industries and build toward the future.

If both generations adhere to these principles, the potential for growth, transformation and profitability is remarkable. Equally important (if not more so) is that the process of building a generational business becomes meaningful, exciting and fulfilling. This business becomes a foundation that perhaps even a future third generation can continue to build on.

Many think of family businesses as old-fashioned companies, passed down from one generation to the next, sometimes across three or more generations. Findings from the first ever Family Entrepreneurship Report by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) debunk that assumption.

The reality: 75% of entrepreneurs in 48 economies around the world said that their family was involved in starting their businesses, either as co-managers or co-owners. The vast majority of startups around the world are, in fact, family businesses.

Entrepreneurial families create economic value and social impact using their businesses, and other ventures, as the vehicle. The business is one of many possible manifestations of their entrepreneurial spirit. To truly understand these families and their potential to drive positive change, we need to look at the topic from a different perspective: family entrepreneurship.

Family entrepreneurship, in the simplest of terms, is how families like the Consilvios act entrepreneurially together to create growth and positive impact. If we are only looking at a particular family business, and not the entrepreneurial activities of the family as a whole, we are measuring their achievements with the wrong metrics.

But the entrepreneurial journey of the Barber family continued. Jack started Mainely Burgers, a fledgling food truck business, in 2012 while a first-year at Babson. Max joined the business the next year; now the brothers are running the business side by side, with support from their parents. Mainely Burgers operates three food trucks, two restaurants, and a fully catered bar on wheels.

At the IFE, we believe strongly that entrepreneurship rests within the family, not one particular business. Programs are designed to help families tap into the innovation and resources of the family, with a focus on unlocking the potential of the next generation to build and create value that is aligned with their family vision. This unique approach helps families develop a set of capacities and skills that enable them to work effectively and entrepreneurially together, while building stronger family ties.

This initiative in Auburn's College of Business combines outreach programming and academic studies in the area of family business. Efforts are directed at being responsive and proactive to the needs of family businesses, and to students interested in studying the dynamics of families in business.

An academic program has been developed which will involve study of the interrelationships between family structures and relations; entrepreneurship; the economy; and business management practices. Visiting family business executives and site visits will be incorporated into this program.

Outreach activities for the Lowder Center for Business and Entrepreneurship will emphasize the individual development of managers/executives/successors through training and education programs, and will cover issues such as leadership development issues for the family/business enterprise; assessment and decision-making involved with economic/organizational dynamics of the family business; and how to manage economic and family changes as they apply to the organization's structure and leadership for strategic planning purposes.

The Auburn Ideas Jam helps ideas and early-stage businesses grow. This is a low-barrier competition with no business plan or slide deck required. The competition is open to both college students and community members residing in East Alabama.

We view entrepreneurship as a learnable process and a journey with several vital steps. Our underlying philosophy is that anyone can be an entrepreneur. With the proper support, everyone has an increased chance for business success.

I believe that the key to a happy and successful life is finding a balance between family and work. It's not always easy to do but it's something that I strive for because I know that it's possible to have the best of both worlds. My family is my support system and my business is my passion and I'm grateful to have both of them in my life.

I have found that in order to maintain a healthy balance, it is important to set clear boundaries between work and home. When I am at work, I make sure to focus only on work-related tasks so that I can fully devote myself to my job. Likewise, when I am at home, I make sure to focus on my family and personal life so that I can fully devote myself to my loved ones. This helps me stay sane and avoid burnout.

I believe that it is also important to have a strong support system in place. I rely on my parents, friends, and other family members for emotional support. They can act as a sounding board when I am struggling to make tough decisions.

When you run a business, it's important to set clear boundaries between what is work and what is a family matter. Professionally dealing with business affairs is also paramount. If you don't have these ground rules in place, it's easy for things to get out of hand.

For example, let's say you own a small business with one of your family members. You may not have a clear boundary between work and family life. This can lead to arguments and resentment. It's important to have a discussion about what is considered work and what is considered a family matter. This way, you can both be on the same page and avoid conflict.

When it comes to business, it's important to remain professional at all times. This means keeping personal feelings out of it and making decisions based on what is best for the business. This can be difficult if your family members are your business partners, but it's important to remember that business is business. Being able to separate your personal life from your professional life is an essential skill for any successful entrepreneur.

I believe that it's essential to establish mutual ground rules before you need them in order to maintain successful business relationships. By defining boundaries and handling business affairs professionally, you can avoid potential conflict and ensure that everyone is on the same page. This approach has worked well for me in the past, and I think it could be beneficial for others as well.

Adhering to one's principles is a sign of strength of character. It takes dedication and commitment to stick to your principles, especially in the face of challenges or adversity. By holding on to your principles, you show that you are dedicated to your business and your family and that you are willing to stand up for what you believe in. This can be a valuable asset in both your personal and professional life. Employees who see management as committed to the company's values are more likely to feel loyal and committed to the business themselves. This can help to create a positive work culture and a strong sense of team spirit.

This means that you are expected to be more involved in the day-to-day operations of the business and to be more hands-on in its management. You are also expected to be more dedicated to the business, and committed to its success. This can be a demanding role, but it is also a rewarding one. As a family business leader, you have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of your employees and your customers. You can create a positive, lasting impact on the community, and you can help to ensure the success of your family's business for generations to come.

Striking the right cord between family and business can be difficult, as you need to learn to detach and take time for yourself in order to be at your best. It is important to find a healthy balance between work and personal time, as too much of either can lead to burnout. I try to schedule some time each day for myself, even if it's just a few minutes, to relax and recharge. This means setting boundaries and learning to say no when necessary. By taking care of myself, I can take care of the business and lead my team effectively. This helps me to be more productive and efficient in my work, and better my ability to handle the demands of my family business.
