Learning something you new every day? So are your cells!
Join us for Jeremy Gunawardena's lecture on
Cell Learning
May 28, 5pm CET
Abstract:
Jeremy will discuss work from his lab that studies the capabilities of cells to learn from their environments. Learning can be defined, in its simplest terms, as a change of behaviour in response to a repeated stimulus and, from a more cognitive perspective, as the formation of an internal representation of external information that can guide behaviour. Old experiments which have been forgotten, as well as studies from the current literature, support the existence of cellular internal representations that are implemented at the molecular level. Studying cells in this way helps us to move beyond the prevailing metaphor of the cell as a molecular machine operating in our World to an autonomous agent that constructs a subjective understanding of its own World.
