Screen Actors Guild Awards (also known as SAG Awards) are accolades given by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The award was founded in 1995 to recognize outstanding performances in movie and prime time television. SAG Awards have been one of the major awards events in the Hollywood film industry since then, along with the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscars. SAG awards focus both on individual performances and on the work of the entire ensemble of a drama series and comedy series, and the cast of a motion picture.
Nominations for the awards come from two committees, one for film and one for television, each numbering 2,100 members of the union, randomly selected anew each year, with the full membership (165,000 as of 2012) available to vote for the winners. It is considered an indicator of success at the Academy Awards in acting categories. The awards have been telecast on TNT from 1998 to 2022, and have been simulcast on TBS from 2007 to 2022. In May 2022 it was announced that both TNT and TBS will no longer air the awards. In January 2023, it was announced that Netflix will air the awards live beginning in 2024 as part of a new multi-year partnership, with the 2023 ceremony being announced to be live streamed on Netflix's YouTube channel as Netflix was still working out its live streaming capabilities at the time of the announcement.[1]
The inaugural SAG Awards aired live on February 25, 1995, from Universal Studios' Stage 12. The second SAG awards aired live from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, while subsequent awards have been held at the Shrine Auditorium.[2] On December 4, 2017, it was announced that the awards show would have its first host in its then twenty-four year history, with actress Kristen Bell presiding over the ceremony.[3] As of 2023, Shakespeare in Love is the only film to receive nominations for all four acting categories and the ensemble award[4] and Everything Everywhere All at Once is the only film to receive four awards, including the ensemble award.[5]
The statuette given, a nude male figure holding both a mask of comedy and a mask of tragedy, is called "The Actor".[6] It is 16 inches (41 cm) tall, weighs over 12 pounds (5.4 kg), is cast in solid bronze, and produced by the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, California.[7]
The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2023, was presented on February 24, 2024, at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California.[1] For the first time, the ceremony streamed live on Netflix, starting at 8:00p.m. EST / 5:00p.m. PST.[2]
Hosted by English actor Idris Elba, while Tan France and Elaine Welteroth presented the show's red-carpet and backstage interviews.[3] The telecast was produced for the first time by Silent House Productions, with Alex Rudzinski serving as director.[4]
Before the nominations announcement, Entertainment Weekly and the Screen Actors Guild co-hosted the inaugural SAG Awards Season Celebration, presented by City National Bank, on December 14, 2023, in Los Angeles.[5] The nominees were announced on January 10, 2024, by Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae via the SAG Awards' and Netflix's Instagram Live.[6][7]
This year's ceremony marked its live debut on Netflix. In January 2023, Netflix struck an 11th hour deal to televise the show, after its previous deal with TBS/TNT expired in May 2022, but the previous year's ceremony was broadcast on Netflix's YouTube channel because Netflix was still experimenting with live broadcasts at that time.[1][9][10]
SAG-AFTRA was in the process of looking for a home for its awards ceremony in 2022 when TNT had signaled it did not plan to renew its licensing agreement to air the show, the labor union said at the time. The SAG Awards had been on TNT since 1998, but ratings were declining in its last six years on the cable network and TBS, with the exception of a post-pandemic bump in 2022. That year saw 1.84 million aggregated viewers on TBS and TNT, according to Nielsen.
Netflix said it would promote the SAG Awards similar to how it would promote other live events. The platform takes into consideration what users have watched before to make recommendations and promote trailers.
Popular musical romance "A Star Is Born" - featuring the powerhouse duo of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga - leads the field for Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are seen as a major predictor of Oscars success.
"A Star Is Born," the latest iteration of the classic Tinseltown story of an aging star and the ingenue he discovers, earned four SAG nominations for Cooper, Gaga, Sam Elliott and best ensemble cast - the top prize.
And superhero juggernaut "Black Panther" could pull a major upset in the best ensemble category - giving its star-studded cast the chance to give the signature "Wakanda Forever" salute from the stage.
But she ultimately put her money on "BlacKkKlansman," which is based on the true story of a black cop who successfully infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan with the help of his white partner, who acts as his surrogate.
She notes it's the only film to earn nominations at all the major awards shows and in the key categories, while acknowledging: "We all must agree that it's a weird year and stats don't matter."
Sure bets and toss-ups
In the individual races, best actress is seen by industry experts as a near-lock for Glenn Close, who has taken home a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award so far for her work in "The Wife."
In the supporting acting categories, Mahershala Ali ("Green Book") is expected to continue his march to the Oscars, but the actress trophy is a toss-up, as early favorite Regina King ("If Beale Street Could Talk") is not nominated.
The Screen Actor's Guild is the union foractors. If you don't have a SAG card in Hollywood, you don't work. These awards are unique, insofar as they honor strictly performers, and because all 160,000 members of the actors' union get to vote on whowill take home the awards.

Perhaps because it takes place right before the Oscars(while the Academy is still deciding on who will be the winners), the starsare particularly friendly to the crowds in the bleachers at the SAG Awards.Celebrities as big as Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Noah Wyle and MartinSheen took the time to come over to the bleachers and shake hands withthe public. That's not something you see at many award shows.

While the PGAs tends to be a more low-key affair than other high-profile award shows, the award show has historically been an indicator of Best Picture Oscar winners. 15 of the previous 20 Best Theatrical Motion Picture PGAs winners have gone on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.
While the SAGs was certainly filled with more traditional red carpet fashion and adorable celebrity date nights, the PGAs was a little more relaxed and offered stars a chance to showcase their slightly more casual styles.
Blunt portrays several toughened characters, who have gone through emotional or physical trauma that they are hardened into a new person. Locke is one of these characters, as she quickly learns to handle a gun and kills those who wrong her. Though she feels remorse for her actions after they occur, Locke keeps her guard up around others. Especially when hiding her syphilis from Whipp, who she finds comfort in.
