The Studio Foundation program is dedicated to exploration, idea generation, critical thinking, and craftsmanship. As a student, you will be introduced to studio techniques and media that will prepare you for advanced study in any medium. Students focus on observational drawing, visual language, 3-dimensional design, and time-based work.

Exploration, idea generation, critical thinking, craftsmanship-this is where aspiring artists acquire the tool chest that will drive their artistic development. The Studio Foundation Department introduces students to a wide variety of studio techniques and media that cut across traditions and technologies. Its curriculum is required of all first-year students before they choose a major. Coursework helps students gain an understanding of the critique process on which much of the MassArt curriculum is based. They learn to take their projects through all stages of the creative process, from inception to design construction, presentation, and revision.

The Studio Foundation Department has an active program of visiting artists and exhibitions that brings students into contact with local, national, and international artists and designers. Studio, gallery, and museum visits complement the curriculum.

Pro Longwear is good too! If you find that it lays down heavy you might want to mix in a drop or two of face oil. Or perhaps try a little bit of Strobe Cream! Even a dab of your fave face moisturizer would work too. You just want something to thin it out a little. Also, are you blending it with anything after you apply it? I find that when a foundation looks heavy, a light dab of a damp Beauty Blender or a quick blend with a kabuki brush helps to take it down a notch.

My two favorite MAC foundations are Face&Body and the liquid Mineralize Moisture. Love me some moisture and light coverage. I love how affordable MAC foundations are, but I find they start smelling funky quicker than other brands, so I never really use up a bottle.

Chie Fueki is a painter based in Beacon, NY, and a 2021 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Fellowship. We interviewed her about her work and studio processes in May 2022. The following is an edited transcript of that conversation.

The initial lockdown of the pandemic, and the time spent in this space, really motivated me to think about this viewpoint from the apartment. At first, I thought wow, I should make a landscape painting since that's what I'm looking out at. But then I realized that making a painting of what I'm seeing out of my window just did not really work for the way I think about things. So I decided to frame the view of the window with two giant black ribbons that kind of acted like a curtain or a quotation mark. I called this installation Mountain Altar.

So a person with yellow, peach or golden undertones would be suited well to an NC foundation whereas a person with red, pink or blue undertones would be better suited to an NW foundation. A person with a beige undertone would be perfectly suited to an N foundation.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation*
Perfect if you prefer a powder compact, and amazing for on-the-go touch-ups. This non-cakey powder helps to absorb excess oils to eliminate shine throughout the dat without drying out the skin. It gives medium coverage and helps to reduce the appearance of pores and blemishes.
