CUPERTINO, Calif.--November 28, 1984--Apple Computer todayannounced a book publishing program to improve the distributionof existing and future Apple manuals and to encouragethe development of computer books and training materials.

Called the Apple Press, the new program will increase the availabilityof Apple manuals by taking advantage of Addison-Wesley's existingmarketing resources and distribution channels. The Apple Pressalso will encourage the development of computer books that containaccurate technical information about Apple products.

As part of the Apple Press program, Apple has established anongoing relationship with Addison-Wesley for the exclusive distributionof selected Apple II and Macintosh user and technical referencemanuals to the trade and college book markets. Apple selectedAddison-Wesley after evaluating proposals from 13 major publishinghouses. "Addison-Wesley has been publishing computer textbooksand other technical materials for over 40 years, so they are familiarwith our industry, our markets and our products," said MarthaSteffen, Apple Press project manager. In addition, the Apple Press includes an endorsement programthat allows Apple to proactively form select affiliations withother major publishing houses. These affiliations will permitApple and a number of book publishers to jointly design and developthe publishers' own computer-related books.

Under the endorsement progr am, Apple and Hayden Book Companyhave entered into an agreement to develop a Macintosh Programmer'sSeries that will contain programming tools and information fornovice to advanced intermediate programmers. Apple expects tosign similar endorsement agreements with other publishers in thefuture.
