Hello Light Railers,

Im yet to read the actual report, but based on this media release and
article, it looks like our submission on Eastlake has had an effect (i
like to think!). Its nice to see public transport access and
availability promoted as a feature.

At present the Redex bus runs to Kingston Station.

regards

Damien Haas

New high-density suburb planned

BY GRAHAM DOWNIE

High-density living with a rapid transport link to Civic is part of
the vision for the proposed inner-south suburb of East Lake.
Six to eight-storey buildings adopting leading sustainable standards
will dominate the development, designed to eventually to accommodate
about 9000 people.
ACT Planning Authority chief planning executive Neil Savery said
yesterday, ''We want to convince people high-density living is not the
bogey many people think it is and to convince industry it can make
money out of it.'' He did not want East Lake to be a theme park, but
an example of what could be achieved in other areas, particularly in
Molonglo.
The ACT Government had committed to retaining a passenger railway
station at East Lake.
In all likelihood, this would mean moving the railway station,
possibly under a multi-storey commercial building, to link with a
busway along Wentworth Avenue. That busway could eventually be
converted to accommodate light-rail transport.
Subject to government approval, construction of East Lake could begin
by May 2012.
The vision for East Lake was to have leading sustainable development,
including designing for climate change mitigation and adaptation,
reducing the use of energy and water, minimising waste, providing for
a mix of housing and responding sensitively to the Jerrabomberra
Wetlands.
Unlike the neighbouring Kingston Foreshore, East Lake would include a
mix of public, affordable and high-end housing.
Mr Savery said he expected plans for East Lake would be submitted to
the Government about July with the view to obtaining a variation to
the Territory Plan, which typically took about 12 months.
