Except not. Because ActivityStreams are built on Atom. 

One is designed to complement the other — and to build on the significant (but lesser) existing adoption rate.

Also: I'm happy to take one step at a time. Let's get 1.0 out the door and let it marinate in the wild for some time.

Thanks Chris for posting here :)

Tyler, I think AS is a layer on top of Atom to make it more suitable
for social data. Hopefully, sooner or later, any social feed will have
this AS layer.
