Dear Friends of Ageing Nepal,

In this issue we will present the main happenings in Nepal on the issues of ageing population during May 2022.

Inauguration ceremony “Basic and digital literacy for older persons”

Ageing Nepal in collaboration with Ujyaalo Community Learning Center inaugurated a Basic and Digital Literacy Class for Older Persons in Tinthana-15, Chandragiri Municipality,  on 31 May 2022 . The newly elected and former Ward Chairman and members including stakeholders, older people and women groups participated in the programme. Ward Chairman committed to provide any support that is needed for effective implementation of the class. Speaking on the occasion, Krishna M. Gautam, Chairman of Ageing Nepal, highlighted the importance of education for all ages  in today's urbanizing society.  Thirty older women (60 and above age group) are attending the class for 2 hours a day to learn basic skills of reading and writing in Nepali and English languages, solve simple numerical problems, use mobile phones and home appliances and other skills that are needed to live in urban areas.

Ageing Nepal has already conducted such classes in 8 different areas of Kathmandu valley since 2016. Till now, 240 older learners were empowered with basic and digital education.

Participation in stakeholder consultations

Representative of Ageing Nepal, Sanju Thapa Magar, CEO, participated and gave inputs in three stakeholders' consultations organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on 11th February, 28th April and 19th May 2022. The virtual consultations were organized three times with priority directions of Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing that are; older persons and development, advancing health and well-being into old age and ensuring an enabling and supportive environment. The consultations were participated by relevant stakeholders from Asia and the Pacific,  and members of the Asia-Pacific Informal Regional Network of Focal Points on Ageing. The main findings and recommendations of the consultations will be summarized and submitted to the 4th Review and Appraisal of MIPPA scheduled from 29 June to 1 July.

The Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing 2002 (MIPAA) on 8th to 12th April 2002 in Madrid. The General Assembly endorsed the resolution 57/167 on 18th December 2002. The MIPAA puts forth a bold new agenda of "building a society for all ages". It has been reviewed three times since its adaptation.

Older Adult of the Month

Rana Bahadur Khadka, 72, Kavrepalanchok

I am a disabled elder orphan. As I do not have a citizenship certificate, I am not eligible for old age allowance. Currently, I am taking shelter in a social organisation that is providing me basic needs. The organisation also helped me to develop my skill in handicraft. Now, I make handicrafts and sell them in the street market. I give my earnings to the organization. I am very satisfied that I could contribute to the organisation where large numbers of homeless and disabled are taking shelter. I will continue it till I can.
