Hello friends.
A quick message to let you all know there will be an opening in the Alder Street Co-op on 5/1/16 (with a move-in date flexible, if needed, until 6/1/16.) Many of you know how co-op living is different than just "having roommates," but here’s some specifics:
Without you, we will be 6 humans, in age ranging from 2 to 46 years. Some of our interests include: learning to talk, dancing, alternative education, social justice, environmental mindfulness, gardening, writing, yoga, art, biking, jumping rope, cooking, music, writing songs, cultivating community, appreciating absurdity, and getting irritated by absurdity.
We are structured loosely as a community of mutual support, and have been a "co-op" for about 15 years. We make decisions consensually during our house meetings, which occur every 4-8 weeks. We share a structured rotation of chores. Each of us cooks family-style house meals twice a month. We buy healthy organic and/or local food with our collective funds.
We have well-fertilized, sunlit garden space and an empty chicken coop in our backyard. Our house is old, and-- in exchange for cheap rent-- our landlord (who also ideologically supports our collective-ism) leaves much of the building repair and maintenance up to us. Thus, we appreciate people with some manual skills or at least the willingness to learn about building upkeep. We tend to attract domestic types, and like to keep the place clean.
It is a month-to-month lease but most folks stay for several years. We prefer people who are interested in staying at least one year. We are an LGBT friendly home.
The available room is a corner room on the 2nd floor with ample natural lighting. Its rent is $394.
In addition to rent, each member puts in about $275 at the beginning of the month for food and utilities, and we ask for a $150 deposit (along with first and last month's rent) at move-in.
We are currently not taking applications for people with pets (other than fish) or children. Our house is, unfortunately, not wheelchair accessible.
If you are interested in this chance to live with some beloved comrades, please email alderstreet...@gmail.com with the following information:
Why do you want to live in community?
What is your typical weekly schedule and time availability for fulfilling house commitments and enjoying the benefits of our community?
Please write a few additional sentences about yourself, indicating why you think you would be a good addition to our household.
Please, if possible, include a phone number where we can reach you. If, from what you have written, it feels like a potentially good fit, we will give you a call.
