Happy Friday Everybody! (April 12, 2013)

Oh my goodness what a wealth of opportunities we have this weekend!  April 13 is crammed with terrific events – see the calendar below for the full list – everything from fun runs, to baseball games, to mentor training, to keeping Waco beautiful.  I personally plan to have lunch at the Waco Downtown Farmer’s Market, Swing by Art on Elm, drop off some non-perishable food items at the SOS Food Drive and maybe even check for great deals at the ReStore half-price sale.    Whew!  Then I’ll go home and take a nap!  If you know of events and announcements that you think would be of interest to the Act Locally Waco community, please send them to Ash...@actlocallywaco.org.  Let’s keep each other informed! Thanks for all you do! – ABT

  • April 29 – Act locally Waco Book Club – We will be discussing The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education by Diane Ravitch. The Barnes and Noble website says: “A passionate plea to preserve and renew public education, The Death and Life of the Great American School System is a radical change of heart from one of America’s best-known education experts. Diane Ravitch—former assistant secretary of education and a leader in the drive to create a national curriculum—examines her career in education reform and repudiates positions that she once staunchly advocated. She shows conclusively why the business model is not an appropriate way to improve schools. Using examples from major cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, and San Diego, Ravitch makes the case that public education today is in peril.” Whether you agree or not, it’s always a great conversation. Join us! For more information RSVP to Ashley_...@baylor.edu.
