Happy Friday Everybody! (May 24, 2013)

Memorial Day is a time to remember and appreciate our neighbors who are veterans or who are currently serving in the military.  Memorial Day in Waco really started yesterday, with the grand opening of the Veteran’s One Stop at 2220 Austin Avenue in Waco.  To learn more about the One Stop, visit their website at www.vet1stop.org or send requests for information to vetzc...@gmail.comYou can also help them out by “liking” their Facebook page.  For every “like” they will receive a $1 donation up to $500, thanks to Bird-Kultgen.

This weekend there are military appreciation days at the Cameron Park Zoo and the Texas Ranger museum (see details below), so if you are visiting one of these places,  take a minute to say thanks, either out loud or in a quick prayer, for the veterans, military personnel and their families you may see there.

If you know of volunteer needs, events, or other summer announcements…please drop us a line at eve...@actlocallywaco.org.  We’d love to help spread the word! Thanks for all you are doing!  Let’s keep each other informed!  -- ABT

·        Join Caritas “Fan Club” to help your neighbors keep cool! - This summer, as in years passed, Caritas of Waco will be serving hundreds of families whose difficult living situations will be made worse because of the high temperatures. Again in 2013 Caritas will offer circulating fans to families who have no air conditioning and will assist those who are in danger of having their electricity or water disconnected. Additionally, Caritas will provide emergency food assistance to many families which have children who normally receive free or reduced cost school lunches but are now home for the summer—the need to feed children at home can greatly stress such families. As a result, Caritas is asking for donations from the community to help secure fans, keep utilities operating and keep food on the tables of families in need. Contributions of any level are appreciated, but suggested donations include $20 to buy a fan for a family; $50 to help Caritas secure food from the Capital Area Food Bank; and $100 to help keep the lights burning and water running in a needy family’s home. Donations to the Caritas “Fan Club” can be made online at www.caritas-waco.org  or by mail to 300 South 15th Street, Waco, Texas, 76701. ·        June 17 – Act locally Waco Book Club – We will be discussing Generous Justice: How God’s Grace Makes Us Just” by Timothy Keller. The Barnes and Noble website says: “It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn’t it full of regressive views? Didn’t it condone slavery? Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need. In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. This book offers readers a new understanding of modern justice and human rights that will resonate with both the faithful and the skeptical.” Whether you agree or not, it’s always a great conversation.
